While I was rereading what I've been writing so far in the living room, Mom joined me on the couch.

"Hi baby, whatcha doing?"

I closed my notebook and looked at her. "Hey Mom. I'm just writing a story."

"Oh what's it about?"

"A girl trying to find her place in the world."

"Oh that sounds interesting."

"Thanks. So what's up?"

Mom sighed. "Holly, why is it so difficult for you to get along with Dad?"

"Mom you of all people should know how unique the relationship between Dad and I is. It's always been super complicated and it's not a new thing for us to have problems, Ma. Dad and I prank and take digs at each other to show our love. I mean you two fight like cats and dogs, but you two still love each other."

Mom just nodded.

"What is it?"

She sighed. "I just hoped that someday you two would have the same relationship that he has with Lily."

(Me freaking too!)

"Mom, I'm not Lily."

"I know you're not, sweetie. But why can't you ever be nice to him?"

"I am nice to him."

"How?"

"I let you two date."

"You let us date?"

"Yeah if I didn't like him, I would've split you two up."

"Well you kind of did."

(When I was a kid, I thought that Simon was cheating on my Mom. So I decided to not talk, look at him and or interact with him whatsoever. My actions caused a wedge between my parents. In my time, I finally forgave him. But in my opinion, our relationship has never really recovered from that.)

"But if you remember, I was part of the plan to get you two together again. So you're welcome."

"Well thanks for that selfless act, sweetie. But why do I never see you two express love or even hug?"

"Well Dad and I say the phrase and we actually do hug, Mom."

"I know you say the words, but I don't see the love between you guys."

"I'll work on that." (All I can do is my part, I can't make him love me back.)

"Okay. I know he hugs you, but do you ever reciprocate it?"

"Yeah Mom, I do. He and I had some real embraces. In fact, we had one back when you two came to my work for the interview."

"But why didn't I see that?"

"I think you were talking to my boss. Sorry I forgot to tell you about his obsession with you."

"Yeah that would've been nice to know beforehand."

"I'm really sorry. I just had a lot on my mind."

"I know, baby."

"But I'll try to be nice and show Dad love in front of you more."

"That's all I ask. But I'm glad that you don't disrespect him in front of your younger siblings."

"Well they look up to me."
