Putting his hand on the baby's forehead and smoothing her hair down on the face, Shaun smiled at me. "She has her father's eyes already." His soothing voice was the first I've heard in a while. It was refreshing to see him act like a human being.
"That means you'll have mommy's attitude." I sent him a glare before cuddling my newborn against my chest. "It's okay, baby. If you have my attitude, then you're going to be strong like me."
"Yeah, and stubborn, too," Shaun said. "Have you ever decided on a name for her?"
My eyes fell. We couldn't decide on a name. Either it was too ugly or it wasn't meaningful enough. Shaun couldn't care less what I selected, so he had no say in the matter.
I shook my head and looked down at my baby girl. Her fists bawled softly as she was sleeping, and she released them. "Y/N?" I looked at Shaun. He was staring at Baby. "What if she is like you? You know like powe-"
"She isn't. She won't be."
"You don't have control over that. If you did, well, you wouldn't be like this either." My heart picked up its pace as my vein grew hot from my blood boiling and powers coursing through me. The only thing that calmed me down was holding Baby. I closed my eyes, counted to 16, and looked back at Shaun.
"She won't be like me in that way, and she'll never know about that life. Do you understand me?" Shaun nodded after a second.
He took Baby from my hands and smiled, rocking her backward and forth. Then, he stuck his finger between her fingers, letting them curl around it. "What are we gonna name you, baby girl?"
"Her name is Carter," I mumbled. Shaun nodded. "That was my mother's name," I added, stretching my arms before laying my head back against the pillow. Shaun turned to me with eyebrows pressed together. "How do you remember that?"
"Because I never forgot."

I leaped from the hard bed, pulling at my wrist which was connected to the bed by handcuffs. Smart.
The door was unlocked, and I could see out of it. It wasn't dark like the other room, and I wasn't in a cage. There was a clock on the wall. Noon. The other people didn't let me sleep in. Well, they didn't even let me sleep.
I swallowed and looked around the room. It was quiet except for ticking and heart monitors. There weren't any shocking treatments that I recognized. To be honest, it was nothing like the other place. I felt out of place.
"You're awake." A young black girl stepped inside, placing food a the table beside me. My stomach growled in response, but I had to wait. I couldn't eat unless they feed me.
"Do you remember anything?" Her voice was soft and careful. Was she afraid of me? I would be. "I take that as I know. You're going to run some test, okay?"
I looked straight ahead as she placed, patched connect to wires on my head and arms. Then, I opened my mouth, waiting for the guard, so I bite down on something. The girl looked down at me with confusion. Then, her eyes widened, "No. Not those kinds of tests. You won't have to do any more of those. You're safe here."
"I'm going to go get someone so you can eat." She smiled small before walking out the door. There was whispering outside the door, a smaller but manly voice came through the door. She shushed him before her footsteps faded in the distance.
Then, the man stepped through the door, eyes red and hair drew back from his face. He looked at me with a frown, and I frowned back. James Buchanan Barnes. I felt like I shouldn't want to see him. He did something wrong. He hurt me maybe.
