Y/N was asleep. It was the first time she slept through the night, and I wanted her to sleep through the morning too. It was something she needed. These last few months... I can't believe she was able to handle this. She was stronger than I was.

I decided to make some that morning as soon as I woke up. Hunger sunk in last night, but I didn't want to move. Y/N had curled up under me. As I said, I didn't want to wake her. As the morning sun poured into the room, it lit half of it. After grabbing my boots and a rag from the door, I grabbed my jacket and grove.

The morning air greeted me as I emerged from the cabin. No loud noises or constant reminders of the Avenger's life. Even though I know it isn't possible, time seemed to freeze while I was in Wakanda. It was impossible to express my gratitude to T'Challa for letting me live here.

Flapjack walked around the house. I bent down to her level and petted her. "Morning, beautiful. How are the kids?" She just looked at me. "Oh, you know me: just living life. That's all I can do."

In a sigh, I walked over to the garden with my bowl and began gathering the ripe vegetables. After that, I grabbed some and placed them down for the animals to eat. I placed water in their bin. The goats came rushing to the bin to drink. Flapjack and her children ran up behind me. Two of them tumbled over each other. I chuckled and stood them up straight.

I grabbed a carrot from my basket and passed it to Flapjack. "Don't tell anyone about this." I rubbed her hand and stood. "I saw that, Barnes." I turned to see Y/N leaning against the doorframe in my clothes. Her hair was in a puffy afro, blowing in the morning wind. With her arms crossed against her chest, she breathed in and closed her eye for a second.

I smirked and looked back at Flapjack. "Alright, scram." I lightly shover her and turned to Y/N with raised eyebrows."What are you doing out of bed?" I kissed her forehead walking past her and into the house.

"Was hungry. I thought maybe you were cooking." I looked her way, deciding to challenge her. "You know, in our day, women were running over themselves to cook for their men." I could read her without even looking. She wanted to challenge me back.

Y/N squinted her eyes at me, "Women also murdered their husbands. Careful, James." I rolled my eyes, setting down my basket. I took the goat cheese from the fridge and ran the vegetables under some cold water. Y/N was by my side in an instant. I asked, "How did you sleep?"

"The bed was hard, and it was cold. Someone kept hogging all the blankets." She side-eyed me before cutting the vegetables into small strips. I grabbed the eggs from the fridge. "Do you want me to apologize?" I asked in a smirk. She rolled her eyes and shook her head.

After a minute or two, she completely took over the cooking while I tidied up the house. We were quiet. Mostly because I think she was thinking. Y/N didn't want to talk about Hydra, and I didn't want to pressure her. She'll come around when she's ready. Plus, I wanted her to forget about that for a while.

"Food's ready." She mumbled, sitting down two plates. She managed to put together eggs, bacon, and pancakes with whatever food we had left. "It smells amazing." I smiled and dug into the food.

"Have you heard from Carter?"

"Yeah, she's been asking if she can transfer schools. She wants to stay in Wakanda." I smiled, knowing damn well I convinced her too.

"Sure, she does. How much did you bribe her with?" Y/N reads straight through me. I forget that sometimes. "Nothing much. I just told her her mom was planning on staying." Y/N laid her fork against the plate and crossed her arms. "What gave you that idea?"
