Nina's POV:
I wake up and I am in Beth's bed with Alex. Beth isn't even in the room. I see my phone lying on the floor right next to the bed. I pick it up and turn it on.
8:30 AM. Saturday, November 8th. Today's Paul's birthday and I won't even be home for our morning tradition.
On every birthday, we always wake the birthday boy/girl up at exactly 8 am by singing happy birthday to them. We always have one of those little hostess cupcakes and we put candles in them.
I sit up. I feel horrible that I ruined Paul's birthday dinner. And I feel even worse that I most likely missed his birthday breakfast, too.
My mom is big on the birthday meals. She makes waffles, pancakes, bacon, eggs, sausage, french toast, and hasbrowns. Occasionally she'll also make biscuits and gravy.
"Hey," a voice said. It was a girl's voice, so I didn't even bother to see if Alex was awake. I looked at Beth's door and there, standing in the threshold was Beth.
"Hi," I said.
"Wake up Alex," she said. "You can try to make the birthday breakfast. Alex knows some shortcuts from my house to his. It'll only take you like ten minutes."
I nod at this. I really did want to make the birthday breakfast. I turn over towards Alex. "Hey, Alex," I say.
"It's alright. I'm up already," he says. "You ready to go?"
"Yeah," I respond, happy I wouldn't have a half-sleep driver behind the wheel. I get up and grab my jacket hanging on the back of the spinny chair at Beth's desk. Then I grab my phone of the floor and my purse off of the door handle it was hanging on.
Alex was ready, and then when left.
8:50 am
We pull up into Alex's drive way. Alex really did know some shortcuts. I practically jumped out of the car.
I was walking hurriedly to the steps while fumbling in my purse for my house key. When I reached the top step I was still looking, when the door opened.
And guess who was standing behind it? My dad. I stand there speechless. I have nothing to say to him anymore. Everything I needed to say to him was already out in the open.
I vented all last night to Beth and Alex. And now my system was clean of anger toward my dad. All that was left was the hope of forgiving him and having my dad back in my life.
"I," I started to to say. "I-I forgive you." Probably some of the hardest words I've said in a while.
"Thank you," he said. I nodded. Then I stood there, expecting him to move out of the doorway, but he didn't.
"Um, can I like, I don't know, enter my home?" I ask. Then he moves back away from the door. "Oh, right," he says, "Sorry."
I look back behind me and Alex is sitting on his porch watching me. I knew he heard everything I said, because there was a smile on his face and he held both of his thumbs up.
Then I close my door behind me. "Happy Birthday!" I yell as soon as I see Paul standing there.
"Thanks, kido," he says, pulling me into a hug. I'm so glad I came home. "You ready for my birthday breakfast?" He asks.
"You guys waited for me?" I ask, tears rising in my eyes because I was overjoyed. Paul was my brother and we were closer than anything, and it hurt that I might actually miss his birthday.
He nodded. Thank God I didn't miss it. Paul, my mom, and my dad, we all go into our second dining room. The one with the small table with only four chairs.
We only had the second dining room with eight chairs for things like our birthday dinners when we invite people.
Paul and dad sit on opposite ends of each other and me and my mom on opposite ends from each other. Then we all joined hands to pray over the food my mom prepared for us.
