I waited for the paramedics while battling with myself whether to call his mom or not. What if she blames me and decides to kill me right now? No ways. I decided to call Menzi instead. I dialled his number he picked up on the first ring.
Menzi: Ndoh are you okay? He sounded worried.
Me: umm yeah im okay but something is wrong with Sthe.
Menzi: what do you mean? Whats wrong with him?
Me: angazi( i dont know) hes not speaking not responding to anything just staring into space.
Menzi: thats strange so when did all this start?
Me: i dont know i woke up and found him like this.
Menzi: okay did you call the paramedics? I said yes.
Menzi: send me the location I'll come there you didnt call anyone else right?
Me: no just you and the paramedics. Please hurry im scared.
Menzi: ok ill be there love dont worry. He hung up. I sent him my location. Pretty soon the paramedics arrived. All his vital signs were normal but they decided to take him in for psychiatric evaluation. They asked if I'd like to come with him, i just said i would follow they should just tell the hospital name and ward. I had to wait for Menzi. It wasnt long after the paramedics left that he arrived.
I just jumped right into his arms. He held me without saying a word. I broke the hug.
Me: um im sorry im just emotional i dont know what is going on anymore i didnt know Sthe had mental problems.
Menzi: maybe he doesn't so we need to make sure he isn't faking it. I'll take you to the hospital but we cant be seen together just incase. I agreed with that we made our way to the hospital. In the car i just kept thinking about my dream about Rose and i smiled at the thought of her watching over me and protecting me.
Menzi: Earth to Ndoh??
Me: oh sorry you were saying?
Menzi: i asked if you mind sharing what you are smiling about.
Me: come on Menzi you dont need to know everything that goes on in my head but if you must know im smiling at the dream i had of Rose.
I explained the dream ti him in detail but left out the part about him also being in it yoh i dont want him getting a big head thinking his my hero. He just said im glad you have a gaurdian angel from above because on earth you already have me. I smiled shyly and looked away. We arrived at the hospital and asked for a Sthe Sibiya who was brought in by paramedics, they showed us where he was being evaluated. Menzi said he'd be nearby but out of sight i should go ahead though. I went ahead when i got there i asked for him by name and surname and when i was asked who i was i told the nurse i was his fiancé, i dont know where that lie came from i just heard myself say it. She told me the psychiatrist was busy with him but that i should wait in the waiting room there will come get me when hes done. I nodded and asked to be shown the waiting room then proceeded to go sit there. Honestly i was worried about Sthe i know him and his mom were plotting to kill me but he had grown on me i had an attraction to him based on how good he's treated me ever since i met him. However i had to face the truth that i was just being marinaded you know when you ant you meat to be juicy and easy to eat. Everything Sthe did for me and to me was just to prepare me for my big roasting. My phone rang interrupting my thoughts. It was a number i didnt recognise.
I answered.
Me: hello?
Caller: hi can i speak to my son hes not picking up his phone. It was his mom.
Me: err your son??
MamThandi: did i stutter? Yes my son you know the one you sleeping next to! Mara this woman is testing me. Did she have to be rude about it nxa.
Me: umm sorry mah its just that im not sleeping next to him we are at the hospital.
Her: hospital? Why, what happened?
Me: angazi mah( i dont know) i woke up next to him and he wasnt responding and staring into space i dont know when or what happened for him to be like that. She kept queit for a second then asked which hospital i was in, i told her then she said she would be on her way. She hung up. After the call the nurse came to tell me the doctor was ready to see me. I followed her to where the doctor was. She told the doctor who i was then excused us.
Doctor: Miss Zungu hi im Doctor Thompson im the the resident doctor for all psych patients please take a seat. At the moment we cant seem to find the cause of your fiance's condition or whether it is a condition usually people who come in this state either have suffered severe shock or trauma of some sort so we will have to do some tests on his brain to detect if theres normal or abnormal activity only then can we give you a proper diagnoses but for now keep trying to engage him he might just snap out of it if we are lucky. Does he have any family?
Me: yes he does actually his mom is on the way.
Doctor: okay when she arrives please tell the nurse to call me.
Me: can i go see him right now?
Doctor: of course you can. With that he stood up and lead me to him. We got to his cubicle and he left me. Sthe was a sight for sore eyes. His dreads were now untied he looked like some sort of mad man. I looked in his eyes. They were so empty, lifeless. I sat down beside him and held his hand thats all i could do. This was a shadow of the man i fell for this wasnt the funny caring mischievous Sthe i knew always lively. I felt the tears stream down my face. I know this was a man who was going to kill me but i couldnt help what i felt i couldn't help that i still felt sorry for him. Maybe that was the problem with me i trust too much i love too much and ultimately i hurt too much. While in those thoughts all i heard was qwa qwa qwa qwa. Then silence i turned to look who it was and there she was his mom, standing over me looking like she was about to breath fire. I kept quiet.
MamThandi: ooh Sthe mtanam( my child) bakwenzeni( what did they do to you) she cried out grabbing his hand from mine.
Me: mah I'll go call the doctor to explain his condition.
MamThandi: Nomfundo what have you done to my son?!
Me: mah? I never did anything i swear to God i just woke up next to him like this.
MamThandi: phuma la( get out of here) you little witch! I just got up and went out living her with her son. I went back to the waiting room. My phone rang. It was Menzi. I answered.
Me: hi?
Menzi: i saw that, im sorry she treated you like that.
Me: dont worry she never liked me why else would she want me dead?
Menzi: theres more to that and we going to find out what it is for now i need you to suck up to her, now that her precious son is out of action we can put our plan in motion.
Me: i suppose so.
Menzi: yeah so you have to act the distraught girlfriend make her believe you still trust her. Visit Sthe everyday if you must. I believe in that house we will find all we searching for.
Me: and what if she doesnt buy it Menzi and kicks me out or worse decide to kill me right then and there.
Menzi: she wont kill you now shes too distracted by whats happened to Sthe thats why we must use this time to our advantage and i know your feelings for Sthe were genuine so its not like you will be faking.
Me: um yeah i got to go as the nurse came in.
Nurse: Miss Zunga they are asking for you in your fiance's cubicle.
Me: who?
Nurse : his mom and Dr Thompson
Me: alright. I stood up and went to the cubicle. Sthe's mom was now sitting down looking calmer. The doctor told me he had already explained everything to her the way he explained to me. He looked at me.
Doctor T: please stay strong for him and continue showing him love speaking to him hopefully this could even be fixed before you have decided on a wedding date. He smiled. Yoh amanga jeso( lies oh lord). The mother in law looked at me with shocked i eyes. I just smiled at the doctor and looked down. She cleared her throat, the doctor left us.
MamThandi: wedding date yani leyo( for what)
Me: well mah umm before all this happened Sthe asked me to marry him.
MamThandi: what???! But he never mentioned anything about wanting to marry you.
Me: i guess it was spur of the moment he didnt even get me a ring silly man. I slapped his arm playfully.
MamThandi: yoh i need to lie down this is too much.
Me: mah im deeply in love with your son and i want him to get better I'll do all the doctor says to make him well again for as long as i live. Thats if i live long enough you know theres a murderer out there waiting to kill me. I hid my smile. That was aimed at her. She cleared her throat.
Her: umm okay ill be going home now are you coming with?
Me: oh no mah i will stay here until he snaps out of thid he just has too. I threw myself at him pretending to be crying.
MamThandi: hai suyabheda manje( you are being ridiculous now) you will need to rest you can come see him in the afternoon its already morning. Come lets go.
Me: oh okay, bye my love but I'll be back we love you i kissed him on the forehead. We went out. While his mom went to talk to the nurses i walked behind slowly. My phone rang i took it out. It was Menzi.
Me: whats up?
Menzi: wow you deserve an award for that performance . He laughed, i wanted to laugh too but held it in.
Me: who said i was acting?
Menzi: Kahle i know drama when i see drama. He laughed again. I smiled.
Me: usile wena( you are naughty) bye. We hung up. I stopped smiling and became the distraught fiance again. That's how i became the " daughter in law" of the woman who badly wanted to kill me. We left in her car. It was silent no one said a word. I hope my angel Rose would protect me from this woman i had to find answered and i was going all in no turning back, they will pay for your death if its the last thing i do!
