"What happened to Derek and the cello-girl?"
Peter scoffed as if Stiles should have known better. "What do you think happened? They were teenagers-- one minute, it's-" he began to mimic a girly teenage voice. "I hate you, don't talk to me," I rolled my eyes at his words. "the next, it's frantic groping in any dark corner they could manage to find themselves alone for five minutes." Cora and I shuddered. We love Derek but we do not need to listen to any story of him making out with anyone. Knowing that he and my English teacher are blah is enough. "Their favorite dark corner was an abandoned distillery outside of Beacon Hills.
Stiles made him pause. "All right, hold up-- how do you know all this? You just said that they were alone."
"Because," Mom said. "The way Peter and I are siblings, we used to be close back then." She shot him a look. "Of course that ended."
"Not my fault." Peter pointed out. Mom rolled her eyes and continued. "Peter was his best friend, his closest confidante. That's how he knows."
Mom continued the story for Peter. "The Alpha pack was there that night, before when their packs were still alive. Kali, Ennis, Deucalion and Talia."
"Talia?" Stiles spoke, he looked at me. "Your aunt." I nod. "My mother." Cora said. "Our sister." Peter said. "Our big sister was the alpha of our pack, but she was the only alpha who was able to shapeshift into an actual wolf."
I always admired Talia, maybe I was a little jealous of her and Laura's ability to do that. Sometimes in New York we'd go for runs to clear our heads, but she'd actually go full wolf. I envied her ability to do that.
"She was the one they came to for advice." Mom nodded. "During that time she was grooming Laura to take over one day, I would join them as Talias adversary. I had no interest in ever becoming the alpha. One of the betas of Ennis pack was killed after he accidently killed a hunter."
"Let me guess." Stiles said. "From the argents." Mom and Peter nodded. "He wanted vengeance." Peter stood and walked to the window drawing the spiral. "Our mark for vendetta."
"Man, you guys really take that revenge thing to, like, a whole new level, don't you?" Stiles noted.
Cora gave him a look. "It's not just revenge. Losing a member of your pack isn't like losing family-- it's like you lose a limb."
"They wouldn't even let him see the body."
"I don't get it-- what does this have to do with Derek?" Cora asked. "Everything." Mom responded.
Peter walked over. "It's never just a single moment; it's a confluence of events. Personally, I looked at Ennis' circumstances, and I saw a profound loss. Derek saw something different. He saw opportunity."
"Opportunity? To do what?" I looked at them. "To always be with her." Peter spoke. "The thing was, he had this constant fear. He was obsessing over it, thinking about it all night, all day-- always on his mind."
I roll my eyes. "I kept telling him not to do it. Every day, the more he thought about it, the more convinced he became. You know teenagers...I bet he even blames me! He's probably convinced himself the whole thing was my idea--"
Mom raised her eyebrows at him. "It was you."
"Come again?" Cora questioned. "I taught Derek's English class," Mom reminded her little brother. "He came to me. What did you think I didn't know?"
Peter grumbled and crossed his arms. "I have no comment."
Mom simply continued. "Back then with Talia, Deaton was her emissary. A sort of second in command."
Cora nodded. "They keep us connected to humanity. But, they're a secret, even in the pack-- sometimes only the Alpha knows who the Emissary is. Derek and the rest of us had no idea about Deaton."
"Or his sister, Morrell." I added. She shocked me. Unfortunately we talked about some very personal topics, and she gave really good advice. How didn't I realize it sooner?
Stiles looked at us shocked. "She's an Emissary, too?" I nod. I thought he knew this already. "Yeah for the Alpha Pack."
Stiles looked at me appalled. "Our guidance counselor??? Why the hell don't you people tell me any of this stuff, huh???" He stuttered. "I shared some really intimate details with her!"
"And did she give you good advice?" Mom asked. "Actually, yeah."
"That's what they do. That's what Deaton used to do for Talia."
Mom sat up. "Paige was led to the school, where she met Ennis. Who was to turn her."
Cora frowned. "Ennis?" She looked at Peter. "Why would you choose him?" Ennis was the one that held me and Cora when Derek was attacked here at the loft the first time, the one I fought in the hospital. The one who is now dead.
Peter shrugged. "Why not? Ennis needed a new member for his pack. Paige was young and strong. Doing a favor for Derek meant Ennis would be in good with Talia-- back then, everybody wanted to be in good with her."
"He doesn't remember it was Ennis, does he?" Stiles questioned. I shrug. "He never told me. If he does, he keeps it to himself."
"So, then what happened? Did he turn her?"
Mom sighed. "Almost."
"He came at Ennis-- a fifteen-year-old boy against a giant. There was no reason for him to fight, she'd already been bitten."
"So, did she turn?"
"She should have." My mom said, "Most of the time, the bite takes. Most of the time."
Stiles sat up, he looked at Peter. "When you offered it to me, you said, "If it doesn't kill you..."
Mom nodded. "If."
"It didn't matter that she was young and strong. Some people just aren't meant for this." Peter said. "But, she fought. She struggled desperately, trying to survive."
"Another in a long line of Beacon Hills animal attacks." I muttered.
"And what about Derek?" Cora asked. "When Derek took her pain, he was killing her. Taking an innocent life takes something from you as well. A bit of your soul. Darkening it, dimming the once brilliant golden yellow to a cold, steel blue." Peter made his eyes glow blue. "Like mine."

"What?" Cora asked Stiles, studying his face. "What's this-what's this look on your face?" Peter and my mom had gone out to get some takeout, after the story we needed some food.
"What look?"
"The kind of look that makes me want to punch you."
"Oh, my God--" Derek muttered. "you are so Derek's sister, I forgot."
I roll my eyes at him. "Well, what's with the look?"
"I just don't believe him." I can't imagine why. Cora had a confused look on her face.
"All right, in Miss Blake's class, we're reading Heart of Darkness, and it's in first-person, right?" She nodded, still not understanding. "Narrated by Marlow. The thing is that he's an unreliable narrator. You know the details of it have changed, you know, just because of his perspective."
I nod. "Well, then we heard the story from Peter's perspective."
Stiles nodded. "Right, and I don't think we got the whole story." Stiles looked at me. "You knew a few details of the story." I cross my arms. "No. That is Derek's personal life. He'll kill me if I tell you."
I winced, closing my eyes. "Wrong choice of words. Okay fine. My mom was right, Peter was the one who was telling him to do it. He didn't want to."
Cora looked at Stiles. "So, what...? Are-are you just gonna ask Derek about the girl he fell in love with and then killed?"
"If I have to? Yeah."
I pat him on the knee. "Good luck."
