Fluff, Friendship

🎸

I knocked furiously on the door to Duff's rundown apartment.
My baby girl, Maelyn, squirmed and cried in my arms.

"I know baby. I know. Just give me a few minutes."
I said rocking her side to side.

I knocked on the door a few more times.

"I'm coming, calm the fuck- June?"

"Duff. Can we stay here for a few days?"

"Yea, yea, come in."

I sighed and walked into the apartment, sitting down on the couch.

"I'm sorry, I just didn't know where else to go."

"No, it's fine. You know I love having you and the baby here."
He said sitting down next to me on the couch.
He smiled looking down at Maelyn.

"What happened?"

"I found him with someone else."

"What?!"

"Duff, please, don't. It's okay. I knew it was gonna end sooner or later."

"I told you he wasn't the one Bug, but you just don't listen."

"I knew it too Duff."

"You just refused to listen to yourself?"

"When I was 8 1/2 months pregnant, we were driving to his parent's house. And I grabbed his hand and put his fingers right on top of her heart. He said he couldn't feel the beat."
I choked out.

"June-"

"And I told him. 'You feel that little bump bump bump, that's where the heart is.' He just shrugged me off. He didn't even try to cover the fact that he didn't care. I knew it then. But I didn't have the heart to leave. I didn't want my baby to grow up in a broken home but look what happened."

"Oh, June. I'm so sorry."

Duff wrapped his arm around my shoulder and let me sob softly into his.

"Cmon, it's only 10, Walmart is open still. Let's go get a few things and then we can come back and go to bed."

"Thank you, Duff."

We drove to Walmart and headed into the store to grab some things.

I wanted a small crib for Maelyn, some extra clothes for her, and I made Duff buy some groceries since he never has food.

Once we got back, I put Maelyn to bed and helped Duff put away the groceries.
I was exhausted.

"Cmon Bug. Let's go to bed."

"Go ahead Duff, I'm gonna take the couch."

"No, you're not, you can sleep upstairs with me."

"No, Duff, that's your bed. I can sleep on the couch it's fine."

"June-Bug Rayne, you're sleeping upstairs with me. Besides Maelyn's crib is in my room. It'll be easier if she wakes up."

"I guess so."

"Great, now let's go to bed."

We went upstairs and Duff went to go shower and I needed clothes to sleep in. Cause there was no way in hell I was sleeping in jeans.

I grabbed a t-shirt from his dresser, and a pair of boxers to use as shorts. Listen, they're actually pretty comfy once you get passed the fact that they're boxers.

I went into the bathroom to brush my teeth, yes, I had a spare toothbrush at his house. I was over so often I just bought one.

Once I was done, I laid down and curled up under the blankets.
Duff came out of the shower, nothing but boxers, and laid down behind me.
He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me closer to him.

"Goodnight, Duff."

"June."

"Hm?"

"Do you love him?"

"I did Duff. For a long time. I was just dreaming though. I knew he didn't feel the same way I did."

"Why'd you stay, you know, besides Maelyn?"

"I needed someone to love me, Duff. My mom's gone; my dad won't even look at me. My brothers and sisters have too much going on in their lives to look after me too."

"You could've come to me you know."

"You have the band and playing gigs and your job at the bar. You're too busy to worry about me and my baby."

"You know you'll always come first with me Bug."
He said in my ear. His head now between my shoulder and my neck.

"I shouldn't. You shouldn't have to make me a priority."

"June look at me."

I turned over, eye level with Duff.

"What did he do to you?"
Duff asks as he puts a stray hair behind my ear.

"He didn't do anything besides get me pregnant."

"He broke you June. Look at you. You flinch every time a door closes too loud, every time you accidentally make a mistake, you think it's not okay. You've got bruises all over, and don't tell me you don't. You're upright and breathing, but you're broken. You aren't the Bug I grew up with."

"I'm still that girl Du-"

"No, you're not. You don't shine and sparkle like you used to. You used to light up a room when you walked into one. He stole your sun from you. He made you dark and cloudy."

He was right. I wasn't my old self. I had lost that shine and spark a long time ago.

"Duff, help me get my sun back. Please." I said as tears welled up in my eyes.

"I will. I promise. You'll have your sun back."
