Duff hates the rain.
"C'mon Duffy, please?"
I begged, pointing to the pouring rain outside."Babe, we've seen rain our whole lives. We used to live in Seattle. Y'know. Where it used to rain all the time?"
Duff rhetorically asked."But it never rains in California! Please, baby?"
"June, I'm not going to dance with you in the rain. We've done that enough times in our life."
He said, not budging."Fine."
I said, stomping over and grabbing the TV remote, and turning off the movie he was watching."What the fuck, babe?"
Duff exclaimed, looking at me like I'd lost my marbles."No. If I can't get my dance, then you don't get your movie."
I pettily spat."Oh, for fucks sake, now you're just being dramatic."
"I'm not asking for a lot here. A simple dance in the pouring rain would be nice."
I said, motioning to the rain outside."For God's sake, fine. C'mon. Let's go."
He groaned, trying to force me out the door."No. Now I don't want to go."
I said, flopping on the couch and crossing my arms. Was I being dramatic and difficult? Yes. But I was getting my point across."For the love of gosh. Why?"
Duff asked, pinching the bridge of his nose."No. I don't want to go if you're going to be miserable. Here. Take the remote."
I said, throwing it where he was previously sitting on the couch."June-bug, Sweetheart, I want to go dance outside with you."
Duff said softly, kneeling in front of me."No, you don't. Watch your movie."
I said, turning away from his gaze."I don't give a fuck about the movie. I care about you, and if you want to go dance in the freezing rain, then we can. C'mon, babe. Let's go."
Duff said, kissing my forehead, cheeks, and nose."You mean that?"
I asked, turning back to look at him."Yes, I mean it. C'mon, baby. Come dance with me?"
He asked, holding out his hand for me."Okay, go get yourself a sweater first, though. I don't want you to get sick."
I told him.Duff laughed and stood up, going to get his jacket; meanwhile, I made my way outside. I couldn't wait for Duff, I was too excited. So, I made my way down the porch stairs and began to spin in circles in our driveway. (It was empty since Duff moved the cars into the garage so they wouldn't have rain spots on them.)
"Didn't want to wait for me?"
Duff asked from the porch."C'mon, babe! The water's perfect."
I said, spinning in a circle again."You couldn't wait until I got out here?"
He reiterated once he had gotten to where I was."I got excited."
I mumbled sheepishly."I knew you would."
He chuckled, grabbing one of my hands in his, the other resting on the small of my back to pull me towards him, while I wrapped my other arm around him."Sing to me, Michael."
I mumbled into his chest."Michael? You haven't called me that since we were kids."
Duff said, looking down at me."Just slipped, I guess."
"What song, June?"
He asked, pulling me closer to him."Our song?"
I requested.Duff nodded and began to softly sing our song.
Until you been beside a man,
You don't know what he wants.
You don't know if he cries at night,
You don't know if he don't.Where nothing comes easy,
Old nightmares are real,
Until you been beside a man,
You don't know how he feels.Once inside a woman's heart,
A man must keep his head.
When heaven opens up the door,
Where angels fear to tread. Some men go crazy,
Some men go slow.
Some men know just where they want,
Some men never go.Ohh, blame it on midnight.
Ohh, shame on the moon.Duff finished the song, and my steps had grown to lack leisure.
"Don't fall asleep on me, baby."
Duff said in my ear."I'm not. Your voice is just extremely relaxing."
I said, gazing up at him."Well, thank you, but I'm not Axl."
"You don't have to be. You're Duff, my Duff. And your singing voice is beautiful and relaxing."
I said, jumping at the chance to make him feel a tiny bit better about his singing abilities."Another song then?"
He asked."Purple Rain, please."
I asked before burying my head back into his chest."Good grief, you are so cliche."
He groaned."Says the one out here singing to me."
I rebutted.Duff didn't respond, just started to sing.
I never meant to cause you any sorrow,
I never meant to cause you any pain.
I only wanted one time to see you laughing,
I only want to see you laughing in the purple rain.Purple rain, purple rain,
Purple rain, purple rain,
Purple rain, purple rain,
I only want to see you bathing in the purple rain.I never wanted to be your weekend lover,
I only wanted to be some kind of friend.
Baby I could never steal you from another,
Its such a shame our friendship has to end.Purple rain, purple rain,
Purple rain, purple rain,
Purple rain, purple rain,
Only want to see you underneath the purple rain.Mine and Duff's rain may not have been purple, but it was perfect for us. And that's all that mattered.
So again, I know this was a lot of lyrics, but the inspiration was there, and I wrote this in like 20 minutes. I thought we could use something wholesome after all of the smuttiness 😂
