Familial Fluff/Slight Heartache?

🎸

Nikki had finally hit rock bottom.

He had died.

I walked into the closet and found him with a needle in his arm.

Needless to say, we've both had enough.
So Nikki decided to check into rehab.

He was folding his laundry and packing his suitcase.
I was downstairs making food for the three of us. Me. Nikki. And our daughter, Maelyn.

She's four, old enough to understand that Nikki's sick. At least that's what we keep telling her.
Our plan is to tell her Nikki's gonna go "get better." tonight at some point.

I headed upstairs and into mine and Nikki's shared room.

"Babe. Dinner's ready. Come down."

"I'll go grab Maelyn. We'll meet you downstairs."

Dinner went by smoothly, then we decided it was best to let our daughter know now. Before we take Nikki to rehab tomorrow.

"Baby."
Nikki cooed as his daughter sat in his lap. I sat next to Nikki on the couch

"Daddy."
She giggled.

"You know Daddy's been sick for a while, right?"

"Mhm. You feel better Daddy?"

"Not yet baby. But tomorrow, Daddy's gonna go to this place. And it's gonna help him feel better."

"Does that mean you'll feel better forever?"

"I hope so baby. But Daddy's gonna go to go away for a whi-le."
He said, tears gathering in his eyes. Voice cracking.

"But you'll come back, right?" Maelyn asks tears of fear gathering in her small green eyes.

"Of course, Sweetheart. I'll always come back. Al-ways."
Nikki said, clutching his daughter so tightly, afraid to let go.

Nikki opened an arm and wrapped one around my shoulder. My head fell on his shoulder.

Deciding it was late, Maelyn was put to bed and me and Nikki went to our room.
One last night together for the time being.

"June."

"Nikki."

"I never thanked you. For finding me."

"You didn't need to. You woke up. That's all I could ever ask you for."

"You shouldn't have had to wish for me to wake up. I'm sorry I put you in that place."

"Nikki, stop apologizing to me. You need to learn to forgive yourself just like I learned to forgive you. I know you hate it. I do too. But that's why you're going. To get better."

"I'm scared Baby. Really fucking scared."
Nikki whispered, tears forming for a second time that night.

"I know Niks. I'm scared too. But you'll be fine. We're gonna be fine."
