Rafe took three knocks to the door. He stands there patiently waiting. His apology is long overdue but he couldn't go another day without his conscience eating him alive. A few minutes passed until it opened.
His face fell into an unnoticeable surprise that he quickly tamed.
"Mrs, Carrera, hi."
"Hello Rafe, it's been a while."
"Yeah, uh, is Kie here?"
Not many words could be formed. All he wonders is if Kiara knows.
"You just missed her, she actually went to your house."
"She did, oh well...thanks."
"No problem."
He quickly left the porch still stunned out of his mind.
JJ arrived at the hospital. He now walked down the hall up to her room. Approaching the door he noticed it was already open.
"Hey."
JJ saw smiles beaming from their faces off onto the walls then the doors and everywhere else it could. Mary's eyes sparkled as she held Luke's hand tightly. It's been a while since Mary smiled that much.
"What happened?" JJ asked, curiously.
They glanced between each other mentally contemplating on who should go first. They finally decided.
"While you were gone, the doctor came to visit and they've been working on finding a neurosurgeon for the surgery. They noticed that there's some tumors in a risky spot but they'll finish that off with chemo." "At first I wondered how we're gonna pay for all of that but she talked to our insurance company and they agreed to help with most of the expenses. We would have to pay the rest but it's not as much as it used to be."
JJ stood in disbelief. Life has kicked the shit out of them but maybe the bandages of comfort weren't so bad. Every prayer he's made actually worked. He didn't want to get emotional but how could he not? This is an emotional moment. So, he treated it as such. Eyes coated themselves with tears of happiness and relief.
"So you're getting the surgery?"
She nodded happily, "I'm getting the surgery."
Mary wanted nothing more than to spend time with her boys. She wanted to prepare herself but also live in the moment not knowing how many more she'd get. Now she has all the moments the sky could hold. There's still ways to go but for now she can rest.
Knowing she's finally coming home.
