A few hours later...

JJ is in the bathroom staring at himself in the mirror. In his hands is a paper. A paper he's been holding onto for quite awhile. It's a flyer for a summer job waxing, and fixing surfing boards at a surfing shack called Daves, and Waves. It also helps teach children, and even adults learn to surf or just buy surfing equipment when needed. He found out from a friend of one of his friends. He made a call about if he they'd had a spot for him. At the time they did not , but luckily for him they called this morning asking if he would like to up on the offer.

Of course he said yes.

The topic of surfing is a very simple thing for him to grasp, and try hard in. The ability to enjoy what he does, and also help his mother in the process seems like a win-win on both behalfs. But also he heard they pay a fair amount of money every two weeks, which is better than nothing. Knowing Mary, she wouldn't want JJ to be doing this, instead she would want him to enjoy his summer stress free. Obviously he's not going to do that. If there is any chance of helping his mother from meeting death earlier than she should then by all means he's going to do everything in his power to achieve that.

How will he hide this, or even try? That's a whole different story on its own that he hadn't taken the time to think through...yet.

Breaking him out of his train of thought is three knocks to the door.

"You alright in there boy?" Luke asked .

"Uh..." He said slightly frightened, "yeah I'm fine, I'll be out in a minute." He responded quickly folding the paper, and shoving it inside his pocket.

JJ quickly grabs a towel wiping his face and fixing his hair before he exits. He opens the door seeing Luke standing a couple ways away.

"Sorry, minor incident." He said walking past going to his room.

He knits his brows together confused on what he means but soon forgets about it, and goes inside the bathroom.

JJ walks over to his nightstand grabbing his phone, keys, and backpack sitting down next to it. It's the same blue nylon material he's had since freshman year. He casually uses it when needed, and in cases like these, he needs it. Once he's gotten what he came for he leaves out .

Out in the living room Mary's reading a poem book called "Milk and Honey" while she's sitting on the couch. As she's doing so her eyes drift towards the blonde that's walking by.

"Going somewhere?" She asked looking up from her book.

"Yeah, going to check on JB he had one to many candies last night went on a total sugar high." He responded not making any form of eye contact.

She furrows her brows slightly, "With a backpack?" She questioned.

He nods reaching the door, "Mhm,"

Shakes her head on not wanting to know what that strange child of hers is up too she said,"Okay tell him I said get well, and I love you."

He opens the door, but turns halfway looking back at her, "Love you too." He walks out closing the door shut.

With that he crosses the patchy yard going to his red motorcycle. Putting on his helmet, and hopping on his bike he starts up the vehicle and drives off to work.

*

He rides down the street almost arriving at his destination. The wind hits his slightly tanned skin feeling warm, and refreshing. The blonde is more than nervous about working the particular job. He hasn't worked full -time since last summer. Of course he's done simple tasks for his dad , Heyward, or even Big John here, and there but most of his free time is spent with his mother making sure she's happy, and healthy, or just school.

With his bike coming to a halt in the parking lot. Before him is small building that has the characteristics to a brown shack. It has a surfboard sign plastered at the top with the writing "Dave's and Waves" on it. He removes his helmet revealing his gorgeous blonde hair that's scattered messily on his head. Taking out the keys JJ slowly gets off kicking out his kickstand while shoving them in his pocket. In a distance is their local beach with small children and their families, or couples and their dogs.

The navy blue ocean shines brightly under the sun as the salt water smell fills the area. Seagulls are making "keowing" sounds while they fly near the shop. JJ fixes his shorts before raking his hand through this hair a couple of times as he walked up. Two guys walk out with new boards in their hands as they chatter amongst themselves. One struggles holding the doors as one of their boards are bigger than the other. Being the fellow citizen that he is JJ jogs up to the door holding it open for them and shortly rewarded with a "thank you" from each.

He gives them a nod soon after he enters inside. The smell of latex and the sound of small mumbles from the customers greets him. Soft music plays throughout. The area isn't too large nor too small for the equipments they sell. Variety of  surfboards hang from one side of the wall going from longest to shortest. On the walls and shelves across from it is a variety of different swim supplies going from scuba gear to bathing suits. Checking around his surroundings he takes a deep breath ambling over to the register.

There's a girl who's turned away from him talking to one of her co-workers. She has brown hair with blonde highlights.

He attempts to get her attention,"Uh, excuse me."

She turns around with a smile painted on her face from laughing at something the person might've said.

"May I help you?" She asked leaning against the counter.

"You guys called me this morning asking if I could come in." He responded looking at her.

She ponders for a moment before leaning over to the left grabbing a small note book. Flipping through she scans the page until landing on the blonde.

"JJ Maybank correct?" She asked meeting his gaze.

She received a nod, "The one and only."

"Perfect I'll show you where you'll be putting your things."

The girl comes around from the counter, and takes him to the back where most of the employees spend their free time.

The nervousness that JJ felt slowly went away that day. He met the manager and he's a lot nicer than expected. He got assigned specific department only helping restock, or clean boards. One day in the future when he's more experienced, or familiar with everything he'll even be able to help teach surfing.

But until then he's doing what can to help his mother as much as possible.

Because one day there might not be no one to help.
