It's been two weeks since I became a senior, and despite having so many classes with Greyson things were great. The only time I even came within four feet of him was in biology class. We sat next to each other but we never said a word. I mean we never needed to and I was happy about it.
This happiness however, completely dissipates when I look at the board, reading its contents.
"MOLECULAR AND GENOME EVOLUTION GROUP PROJECT"
Shit. A group project? I absolutely hated working with others, I either did all the work and they got credit or they actually do help, but slow me down.
Maybe I should ask if I can do it alone? It's worth a shot, yeah? Before I take my next breath the teacher speaks.
"Good morning students, now that everyone's settled we can begin. As you all can see from the board, you have a group project." Almost immediately the class is filled with groans and sighs from my classmates.
"Now students I'm giving you two weeks to complete this project and it's going to be forty percent of your overall grade. You'll be working in groups of two. You're already seated that way your partner will be the person beside you."
Of course, the project trope, because my life is some kind of freaking romance novel.
I felt my heart sink, all happiness from the last few weeks melt away into this big black ball that sits in my stomach. Everyone turns to their partners with a shrug because they've sat next to their friends. I immediately regret not coming to class earlier on the first day. I'd rather work with anyone other than Greyson.
"Okay class you may use the rest of this class period to discuss with your partners a strategy. I expect a written synopsis at the end of class."
I close my eyes dreadfully as I shift turning to face Greyson who hasn't said a word the entire time. I open my eyes to see an amused smirk on his lips and his eyes on mine. His emerald eyes sparkle with mischief before he opens his mouth to speak to me for the first time in years.
"Hey partner." He says with a smile, his voice a lot deeper than I remember causing my heart to hammer way faster than I anticipated.
He only said 'hey' geez.
"Hi" I say with a forced smile that comes out as a grimace.
"Someone's excited to work—" I cut him off.
"Look." I say my tone venomous. "I don't wanna work with you just as much as you do. So how about you just let me do it and I'll put your name at the bottom or something and we pretend you actually gave a shit about this grade hm?"
"Where's the fun in that?" he says, that stupid smirk still on his lips and I just want to slap it off. I wonder how that would feel...his lips do look soft.
"There is no fun. That's the point. I won't be around your dickface longer than I have to and you still pass. It's a win win." His smirk turns into a smile at my words.
"Really? Dickface? That's what you're going with?" He rolls his eyes in amusement. "You're right though, it is a win win." He turns back to his desk, beginning to write what I assume is the synopsis that's due at the end of class.
I nod a bit confused at his compliance but grateful nonetheless.
He continues writing the synopsis that I am beyond confused about but doesn't say another word. I roll my eyes pulling out my laptop to start my research for the project. My hands flying over they keyboard, and my eyes swiftly analyzing the screen, trying to keep my cool.
I continue documenting my research until the end of class. When the bell rings I shut my laptop placing it in my bag with lightning speed, desperate to get the hell out of here. I stand up about to leave when Greyson calls out to me.
"My place at 7."
Just freaking peachy.
"Sure, text me the address." I turn to leave again.
"I don't have your number."
I write my number down on a piece of paper and chuck on his desk before practically bolting out of the class.
You do now.
