Chapter 3

July 1st, 1994    Boston, MA

Four days later...

Elizabeth and Mitchell bring the girls' into their new home. Mitchell takes Isabella upstairs to her room as Elizabeth takes Juliet to her room. Juliet's room is painted in a lovely blue-green hue containing her dresser, crib, and chair. Isabella's room is painted in a bright shade of pink with bits and pieces of purple as well while containing the usual baby items needed. Elizabeth puts down Juliet for a nap in her crib. Mitchell sits in Isabella's room and just comforts her. Elizabeth smiles while watching Mitchell in Isabella's room. It just feels like a real family moment already happening. As soon as Mitchell is done with Isabella, he puts her down for a nap. Then he takes Elizabeth downstairs and make themselves lunch.

            "Aren't the girls' precious?" says Elizabeth. "Yes, they are honey." says Mitchell. "I feel kind of bad that our friends' Louise and Kent couldn't take care of them." says Elizabeth. "I know you do. Would you like a glass of wine?" says Mitchell. "No thanks. I'll stick to water." says Elizabeth. "This is one dream you've wanted forever- to have kids. And it came true! But we both have jobs and how can we take care of them during the day?" says Mitchell. "I'm off in the summer and you have some days to work, don't you?" says Elizabeth. "I do have days to work on and you have the summer free to take care of them. I don't see a problem with that at all." says Mitchell. "Me neither." says Elizabeth.

As soon as they are done talking, they hear Juliet and Isabella cry. Both of them run upstairs quickly to get them to calm down. Elizabeth has finally calmed Juliet down, while Mitchell is trying to get Isabella to do the same thing. Now that both of them are sound asleep, they take the girls' with them downstairs and lie on the couch for a quick catnap.

June 25th, 1995   Boston, MA

A year later and one month earlier...

On this morning, Mitchell has to go to work today and Elizabeth is at home taking care of the girls'. He leaves as soon as Elizabeth gets the girls' out of bed and fed for breakfast. She takes them both to their highchairs in the kitchen and gets their baby food and feeds them. As Elizabeth is feeding them, Juliet smiles when she gets fed but Isabella doesn't respond as well. She continues to feed them and gets them dressed after they've been fed. As soon as they are dressed, Elizabeth has an idea up her sleeve. She would like to take Juliet and Isabella on a walk around the park.  She packs lunch for herself and the girls'; also gets the girls' bottles, diapers and pacifiers. Elizabeth puts them in the carseat and gets the twin stroller out for the outing. She drives to the park and gets everything she needs out; puts Juliet on one side of the stroller and Isabella on the other. They walk around for about an hour or so and find a spot for themselves. As Elizabeth sits down, she notices a friend of hers from work named Randall. She sees him and they chat.

            "Hi, Randall; it's been too long." says Elizabeth. "Hi, Elizabeth how is your summer going?" says Randall. "Just fine; been taking care of the girls' in the stroller here." says Elizabeth. "How old are they now?" says Randall. "They'll be a year old tomorrow. I sent invitations out for their 1st birthday like a month ago. Did you get one?" says Elizabeth. "I did. I'm thinking about coming tomorrow." says Randall. "Oh, fantastic!" says Elizabeth. "I thought that would make you happy. Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow, then." says Randall. "Yep, I will. Bye now." says Elizabeth.

As soon as Randall left, Elizabeth feeds the girls' their lunch and they head their way out of the park to go home. She notices Mitchell home surprisingly early from work today. I wonder what the occasion is?- Elizabeth thought. She gets out of the car and puts the girls' stroller away and gets them out of the car along with their day bag. Elizabeth walks in the house with the girls' in tow and notices Mitchell in the living room with roses & chocolate.

            "You okay, honey?" says Elizabeth. "Yeah, I'm fine. I figured you and I could have a nice afternoon together while you put the girls' down for a nap." says Mitchell. "Okay, I'll do that. give me a sec." says Elizabeth.

Elizabeth puts both Juliet and Isabella down for a nap; then, sees Mitchell right behind her with the roses and chocolate from downstairs. She's a little surprised at the moment.

            "I am so happy to see you right now. Thanks for the unexpected surprise home today. Let's get this over with before the girls' start crying." says Elizabeth. "Okay, let's go then, baby." says Mitchell.

Elizabeth and Mitchell give into their passions for the next half-hour and something came across Elizabeth's mind.

            "What is it?" says Mitchell. "I don't know. Let's stop for a minute." says Elizabeth.

She completely forgot about getting things for the girls' 1st birthday tomorrow and she tons of people coming over. 

It's my party and I'll cry if I want to...

June 26th, 1995    Boston, MA

The next day...

Today is the girls' first birthday and the whole celebration has been planned at home. Elizabeth gets the girls' up and noticed another surprise downstairs. Mitchell went out before he got home from work yesterday and got the decorations for the event today. He goes to make breakfast as she feeds the girls'.

As soon as breakfast is served and done, Elizabeth gets the girls' dressed in their party dresses she picked out for them. She gets the girls' downstairs and notices her guests are arriving for the event today. This is going to be one fun event for Elizabeth and Mitchell to witness. The party is just getting started and Elizabeth introduces Juliet and Isabella to their cousins and they play until it's time for cake and presents. As soon as they are done playing, Elizabeth sits on the floor with Juliet and Isabella and they open their gifts. Both girls' received an enormous amount of play toys, new clothes, shoes, diapers and other baby things. When the gifts are done, Elizabeth places both Juliet and Isabella in their high chairs and has Happy Birthday sung to them. Juliet grabs a piece of the cake and smashes it in her face. Isabella does the same thing as her sister. The party continues on for the next hour, and then everyone leaves. 

            "What a fun day!" says Elizabeth. "It was fun. The girls' seemed real happy today." says Mitchell. "They did." says Elizabeth. "Are you going to get the pictures developed tomorrow?" says Mitchell. "Yeah, I'm going to do that." says Elizabeth. "Okay, just wondering." says Mitchell.

After they are done talking, Elizabeth gets the girls' changed and put in their rooms for a nap and sits with Mitchell in the parents' bedroom to talk. Within a few minutes of talking, Mitchell's voice gets louder and a loud slap is heard from the parents' bedroom. The piercing sound frightens the girls' to the point that they start crying. Elizabeth hears this song play in her mind by a band she's never ever heard of- Nine Inch Nails. The song Hurt repeats through her mind as Mitchell is doing some wrongdoing to Elizabeth.

I hurt myself today

To see if I still feel

I focus on the pain

The only thing that's real

The needle tears a hole

The old familiar sting

Try to kill it all away

But I remember everything- Nine Inch Nails

                    The song ends playing through her mind and the bad things stop from Mitchell.
