“I don’t think it changed my opinion about him, he might have made mistakes or did something unappropriated, but I cannot judge him based on that, when I don’t even know his side of story.” Bela voices out her thoughts and looks away from Jay.
She is shaken by the story. She feels worthless and disgusted for not being able to inquire about it back them. She’s a terrible friend.
Couldn’t even know what was going through Jake’s mind.Does she really know him better than anyone? Is it the same Jake she fell for? She let the questions mingle inside her as she continues to stare at the dark blue sky.
Jay is quieted by the reply, he follows Bella’s gaze and stares at the sky. That’s right! Bella would never leave Jake’s side.
What was he even thinking when he told her the story, did he thought that she’s hate Jake like he did? Was he expecting something from her? He didn’t have answers for them, not yet.
But then again, he never tried to know the story from Jake’s side.

Tired and dizzy, Jake was staring at the ceiling, laying on his bed.
Bella’s face flashed in front of him and he tries to think of the recent events.
Bella chose Jay… she doesn’t want me anymore… she looks really happy with him… I shouldn’t think about her… I shouldn’t think about them… I cannot snatch away her happiness…I…
Jake sighs for the umpteenth time.
Maybe it was time to let go of the only person by his side who stayed with him the longest.
It had to end somewhere and that time is now.
It had always been that way, people had to leave him at some point.
No one is going to stay forever, no one. The memories are lost, promises are broken everything has its expiry date.
But for Jake, the date always came out pretty soon.
His Dad died when he was young, at the age of 4. He barely remembers his father, the only time he recalls seeing his face was on his funeral, on that big poster.
His Mom used to work overtime to fulfil their needs and he never got to be close with her.
She was devastated by her husband’s death. Locked herself in her room and stayed there for days.
So, all Jake could do for her was to be a good boy, at least that’s what she asked of him and of course he obliged.
He could still hear her crying at night in her locked room after she worked whole day. And he was left alone, as always.
What could a five-year-old do anyways?
He was used to it though, it was a routine, waking up in an empty house, going to bed in an empty house.
Studying to divert his mind off certain things and that’s how he spent his days when he was younger.
Play alone, Study alone, eat, sleep and repeat.
That changed after a year when he moved out of his old house, mostly because it reminded his mom of his father. And they wanted to start their lives afresh in a new town.
The day he met Bella…
Flashback
“Bella come here!” Clara shouted from the kitchen, “The new neighbours have arrived.”
Six-year-old Bella hopped down the staircase from one stair to another. She pouted when she reached the kitchen and asked her mother, “Mommy you called me?”
“Ah yes dear, someone arrived right next door. They are our new neighbours and we should greet them properly. Let’s go and welcome them in our neighbourhood.” Clara sweetly replied to her daughter.
“Okay Mommy, letch goi!” she jumped in enthusiasm and twirled her sky blue skirt around.
Clara adorably pinched her cheeks and went in the kitchen and came out with a plate of freshly baked cookies.
“Cookies!” Bella widened her baby hazel eyes as she tried to reach for one of it.
“No these aren’t for you. They are for the neighbours. I saw a small boy about your age getting out from the car. It would be a pleasant treat for him. And maybe you’d be good friends in the future.” Clara aforesaid and plopped the tip of Bella’s nose.
In response, Bella scrunched her nose. “Then I will give it to them! Let me hold it!” Bella delightfully let out her demands.
Her mother sighed in defeat and gave the plate to Bella, “But promise me you won’t have any,”
Bella whined but agreed nonetheless, “Promise.”
They went to their neighbour’s door and Clara knocked on it.
A pleasant black-haired lady opened the door for them, “How can I help you?” a small boy hid behind his mother and glanced at Bella.
She cheerfully waved at him with one hand and held the plate in the other. Flashing a charming smile his way. But he hid behind his mother again.
“We are your neighbours, right next door! I am Clara and this is my daughter Bella,” Clara introduced and the lady nodded her head.
“It’s nice to know the neighbours. I am Sally and this is my son Jake.” Sally turned around and made Jake stand in front of them.
“Hi Jake!” Bella greeted him. But he just looked down as his cheeks turned red.
“Sorry about that, he doesn’t really warm up to new people.” His mother explained to them and passed a nervous chuckle.
“No don’t apologize, it’s completely fine. Do you need some help with the packing? Let me know if there’s anything I can do.” Clara cheerfully offered.
“Really? I could use some help in setting the kitchen.” Sally timidly asked for help.
“I’d be glad to be of help, and you can also come have dinner with us until you set everything up, we also bought some freshly baked cookies.”
“That’s so thoughtful of you. Thank you.” Sally tensed up a bit, she was grateful to have found neighbours like them.
“No need to thank me, that what neighbours are for.” Clara gave out a friendly chortle.
“Please come in!”
Both their moms were inside the kitchen, talking to each other and briefing about their lives as if they were long lost sisters.
Bella grinned wider and stretched her hands towards Jake to give him the cookies. He hesitantly took one of them and nibbled onto it.
“My mom said that you’d make a good friend. So would you like to be my friend?” Bella curiously got closer to him as she saw him eating the cookie.
JaKe stopped and took it away from his mouth, and shifted his gaze from cookie to Bella.
“You already had it, you don’t really have a choice. We are friends from now on!” she happily cheered and gave a toothy grin.
Jake ate the cookie in silence and mumbled in between, “Friends...”
