Interrigation

Heading back to the compound, you had one thing on your mind, Bucky. The team had said that they were unable to get answers out of him but you were adamant you would. You were the best interrogator and this case was extremely personal. You had to get Bucky to reveal who it was that gave him the orders. Who the puppet master was. You thought it was the man that kidnapped you all that time ago but he was dead, Loki made sure of that, meaning that whoever gave Bucky the dark object was secretly the person controlling everything all along from the sidelines.

Walking into the compound, you were greeted by Steve who told you Bucky was ready and started leading you towards one of the briefing rooms.

"Steve, where are we going?" You asked confused.

"You asked me to prep Bucky for an interrogation, I have done that." He replied.

"I want it conducted on the lower levels." You said nonchalantly as you both walked towards the elevator.

"What? You want him in holding?" He exclaimed, furrowing his brows as you both entered.

"Well it's better than going all the way to SHIELD." You declared pushing the button and looking straight forward as you felt Steve still looking at you.

Striding into the briefing room, you saw Bucky sitting with his head in his hands before his attention was caught by you.

"You, up, now, we're changing location." You ordered clicking your fingers.

Bucky looked at you before looking behind you at Steve who was probably trying his hardest to give an encouraging smile. Looking back at you, Bucky stood up and followed you as you walked out of the room. The three of you entered the elevator in silence and headed for the lower grounds that were used to hold criminals when SHIELD was full or the Avengers needed to question them first.

When you exited the elevator and started walking down the corridor, your mind decided that now was the best time to take a trip down memory lane. You remembered the first time you was here with Bucky. It was a Saturday night and you were supposed to be going on a date but instead Fury decided it'd be a good idea to call you into 'work'. You conducted a successful interrogation and then Bucky kissed you against the wall and revealed his desires. The thoughts made you feel nauseous. Remembering his hands against your bare skin made you feel dirty.

Arriving at the door, you turned around to Steve.

"I've got it from here cap." You smiled.

"Are you sure y/n, I can come inside with you." Steve offered.

"No" you said looking towards Bucky "he isn't going to try anything and besides if he did, I'm much better prepared for him this time." You quipped earning a gulp from Bucky.

Steve gave you a nod before turning around as you and Bucky entered the cage like room. These rooms were reserved for the worst of offenders. You gestured for Bucky to sit down which he did. You narrowed your gaze at him for a few moments before starting to speak.

"I thought this'd be more comfortable for you" you said faking a smile.

"It's a cage in the compound y/n" he deadpanned.

"Yes, made to contain monsters."

Silence fell over you both as Bucky looked down at his hands. Looking back up at you, he gave a small smile.

"It is good to see you y/n."

"Yeah well I wish I could say the same." You said walking closer to the table that separated you both as he sat down watching your movements. You looked down at him with your hands on the table absolutely seething. He was looking straight back at you with his usual expression. This was the first time you had properly looked at him since that night at the mansion. He looked as if he'd aged. Not physically, but his eyes held more stories in them, more pain.

"Seven has your eyes." Bucky commented.

"You do NOT say my daughters name" You snarled glaring at him.

"I understand. I'm sorry." He mumbled looking down again. You almost felt bad. How dare he make YOU feel like the bad guy. You tried your hardest to keep up with your rough exterior.

"No I don't think you do understand. You nearly killed me that night, I nearly lost her." You snapped, hitting the table as Bucky quickly used the back of his hand to rid his cheek of an escaped tear.

"Anyways, we're here to talk about whatever vile creature sent you" you said stepping backwards from the table.

"I don't remember." He replied.

"Well remember."

"I can't, it's like there's a gap." He said putting a finger on his temple.

"A gap?" You questioned.

"Yes. I-I can't remember y/n. Please I can't." He almost begged looking at you desperately.

You decided to try a new tactic especially considering that Bucky was on the verge of opening the floodgates. Walking towards where he was sitting, you crouched down at his side as he turned to face you. Grabbing his hands, you looked up into his eyes pleadingly.
"Bucky please understand, there is someone or something out there that is dead set on harming my daughter. I need to know who so I can stop them alright." You beseeched as your thumbs unconsciously drew circles on his hands in yours. You wouldn't have even realised if not for the difference in feeling of one thumb caressing skin and the other metal. You looked down at your hands before quickly standing back up and stepping back.

"I want to help you y/n, I really do but there's nothing there. Any sort of information, if any, is going to be stored in my subconscious which is somewhere I don't want you to go." He insisted.

"You've left me no choice." You uttered.

"Please y/n, I don't want you to see the things I had to endure. I know they're still there. I have nightmares about them every night. Please y/n, this is a fear I can't let you see." He implored. You understood how it felt to be a prisoner to your subconscious at night. Nightmares found you easily too. "Please y/n" he begged feeling you entering his mind.

"I'm sorry." You said with a sad smile as you felt him lowering his guard allowing you easier access. No point in avoiding the inevitable.

Bucky always had the same fears. He was scared he'd hurt someone. That he'd turn into the winter soldier again. That people would always see him as a monster but this time was different. Bucky had only ever been scared of himself but now, there was something else, something dark. You also saw someone new that he was afraid he'd hurt. Your Sev. You tried to focus on this entity he feared but you couldn't see a face. All you could see was the horrific torture Bucky endured when he traded himself for you. You could almost feel exactly what he felt. It took Bucky forever to be 'wiped'. He kept holding onto the memories of you. You couldn't see the puppet master, only it's loyal subjects. At this point, Bucky was reduced to tears as much as he tried to stifle his misery and despair.

Retreating, you walked towards him and pulled him into a hug.

"I'm so sorry y/n. I didn't want to hurt you. I tried my hardest to fight against it all but it was too much." He cried.

The feeling of Bucky's shoulders moving up and down as he sobbed prompted your own tears to begin to fall. You didn't even know why you were crying. Perhaps it was because you'd just seen everything he had to endure or the fact that you couldn't say a proper goodbye to him. Maybe you were grieving for the old y/n. The y/n who's last conversation with Bucky, not the winter soldier, was when he said 'I love you'.

Pulling away from him, you both looked at each other with tear stained cheeks before you began to laugh.

"Well, I take it I don't look intimidating at all."

"You look fine." He smiled back.

Maybe Bucky had also remembered that Saturday as you were walking towards here. It's crazy how quickly things can change.
