Chapter 18

"Lio, may I ask you something?"

From the tone of your voice, he presumed you wanted to ask him something important.

His heart started beating faster.

"She's not going to ask something that important, is she...? What am I even expecting?" he thought

"Sure, you can ask me anything" he replied.

You then proceeded to ask

"Why did you come home late?" you asked.

Ah, so that's what your question was about.

Lio knew you wouldn't ask something regarding feelings, but he still felt disappointed.

"I also wanted to speak with you about it" he said "because one of the reasons I came home late was you"

You? He came home late...because of you?

"What do you mean?"

"Some policemen approached me to ask about you"

You felt terrified. What if they approached him because they discovered you were the cause of the fire? What if you were putting him in danger?

You felt the urge to leave him. If him being involved with you put him in danger, you wouldn't have hesitated and hid alone.

Lio must have read your thoughts through your face. You were clearly scared.

"Were you thinking about leaving me for protecting me?" he asked.

You silently nodded. You felt bad for him.

He had an angry look in his eyes, but he also looked like he understood your intentions.

"Don't even think about leaving me if it's for protecting me. I won't let anybody do something to you." he reassured you.

You were still a bit unsure, but you trusted Lio.

"And also, you didn't let me finish speaking" he continued.

You looked at him, puzzled.

And then he started reassuming what had happened yesterday.

"Lio Fotia, right? Would you please come with us for some questions?"

Lio turned around. Some policemen had approached him.

"Are you fucking serious?" he thought.

He would have gladly declined. He hated policemen, or authorities like them. He still had to overcome his trauma with Freeze Force.

But he accepted. He just hoped he would have returned home in time.

They reached the police station. A policeman reassured him, and told him that he wasn't under arrest, they just had to ask him some questions, questions they also asked to his teammates from Burning Rescue.

This incredibly reassured Lio a bit. Looks like policemen didn't hold a grudge against him or Gueira or Meis for what he had done when he was a Burnish.

Something that he honestly didn't regret doing.

They welcomed him in an isolated room, and started asking.

"Mr. Fotia, we asked you to come here because we are investigating in someone's disappearance."

Lio had already understood who they were talking about.

"Would you happen to know this girl?"

The chief showed him your identity photo.

Lio answered that yes, he knew you. He described how he knew you.

He asked them if you had done something and if they were searching you to arrest you.

The chief answered in poor words that they were just searching you because you were missing, and the one that got arrested was your manager"

"My manager? Why did they arrest him? I attacked him with candles" you replied.

Lio found it really funny of you to attack someone with candles. Not being able to create flames surely had an impact.

He continued with his story:

"So they arrested her manager" Lio thought.

He wanted to ask more about it, but he had the feeling that if he asked more, they would have found it a bit suspicious. He didn't want to imply.

It was getting really late. Lio was starting to get worried, but he didn't want to show the policemen that he was in a hurry.

He just was worried for you.

And when they "released" him, he made sure to drive at a really fast speed. He wanted to make sure you were okay.

But he didn't find you"

He looked at you with a clingy gaze, his cheeks blushing. Looks like he wanted to say something more.

"...I'm sorry if I was too harsh yesterday" he said "I was tremendously worried"

You mentally melted. He was so cute when he showed he cared.

Now that you think about it, you realised you got to know many expressions of his in the past times you've been with him.

He was sure cold, something that probably was part of his character, him also being the former Mad Burnish's boss, but when he wanted, he could easily manifest his emotions.  When he cared, when he was angry, when he was mentally hurt and so on.

And you were the only one he was showing these emotions to.

"I'm relieved" you said, laughing "when we first met in the pizzeria I thought you hated me...I could sense you staring at me you know?"

He was shocked. And stayed silent for a while, which troubled you a bit.

"Actually, there was also another reason I was that angry yesterday"
