I woke up in an empty bed the next morning when the alarm clock went off. I got up and went to go shower. I heard Evan moving around in the kitchen. I poked my head in to say good morning before I got ready. Once we were at the office, I was given passwords and my biometrics were put into the system. Evan handed me a small circular electronic disk. "Keep that on your person at all times."

"What is it?" I asked.

"It's a phone. See?" He showed me how to work it. "You can only contact other people with these. I already programmed it with the numbers of the rest of the team."

“Okay." I nodded and put it in my pocket.

"Are you ready to meet everyone?" He asked, looking down at me.

"Yeah, sure." I smiled, "Lead the way."

"Then let's go." He walked me back down a dim hallway. He put his hand on the scanner while another one scanned his eye. It chirped as a green light flashed. There was a click and the door swung open. The room it opened into was equally dim, if not more. The only light in the whole room was the ambient light coming from the computer monitors that lined the walls. There were four people sitting at the different stations, with two left vacant. No one looked up when we entered the room. The door closed behind us and Evan walked me to the back station. "This is your work area." I expected him make some kind of introduction, but he never did. I nodded and sat down.

The girl on my right didn't look over, or say anything to me. She was furiously typing away. There was a stack of files at my station. Evan indicated that I should be going through them. I opened the one on top and put it on the desk so that the light from my monitor could illuminate the page. I did this for hours. Evan put a hand on my shoulder around lunch time, "You hungry?" He asked.

"No. I need to get through these." I replied quietly.

"Okay." He nodded and left, laughing with the rest of them. I sighed when I was alone. I wasn't going to let this beat me. Once I was done, I started in on making action plans for each one. I was still in the middle of the first one when they came back. I kept my mouth shut and gave them the same treatment I'd gotten that morning. Didn't look up. Didn't acknowledge. It didn't occur to me until about five o' clock that I hadn't really eaten all day. I took a deep breath to try to steady myself and get through the day. I'd definitely decided that I was taking my own car to work from now on. "Are you ready to go home?" Evan asked, close to six.

"Yeah." I replied, realizing that we were the only two left in the room. I saved my work and stood up, more than a little shaky. I quietly walked with him back to the car as my vision started to blur. I managed to make it into the car before I passed out.

"Katherine?!" Evan was shaking my shoulder and calling my name.

"What?" I mumbled, pushing his hand away.

"You passed out."

"No I didn't. I fell asleep." I lied. "Happens sometimes these days." I opened my eyes and sat up. We were sitting in the parking lot at our complex. "I'm fine." I got out of the car and went into the apartment. My first trip was to the kitchen. I ate a thing of yogurt as he stood there watching me.

"Are you okay?" He asked.

"I told you that I'm fine." I replied. When I was done, I threw the small plastic cup away and grabbed my keys and purse. I needed some me time and a giant hamburger.

"Where are you going?" He asked, not stopping me as I headed for the door.

"I have some errands to run. Boring stuff." I explained. "I'll be back." I said just as I left. I got in my car and just started driving. I found a burger joint a couple miles away. I ordered a double hamburger with everything on it. I devoured it like it was nothing. When I left there, I was in the car in search of dessert, when my phone rang. "This is Bartowski." I said.
