Later that evening, bags had been packed and flights had been booked. Tyler and I were sitting in the living room, shooting the breeze and talking about old times when there was a knock on the door. "That'll be Ellie," I said, standing up.

"I'll be back in the guest room," Tyler said, heading back down the hall.

I moved slowly toward the door and opened it without looking. It wasn't Ellie. It was Alex. I felt my face turning red, "Hi," I said quietly. "Your dad isn't home."

"I know. I came to see you," she said. "Can I come in?"

"Um, sure," I stepped aside and let her in. "Do you want something to drink?" I asked.

"No, thank you," Alex replied.

I sat down on the love seat, and gestured for her to take the couch. "So, I'm Kat Bartowski," I said, for want of literally anything else to say.

"I know. I'm Alex, but you know that."

"Yes. Can I ask why you're here?" I had to ask.

"I wanted to introduce myself, and I had some questions," she explained. "I know that you weren't planning on meeting me the way you did, and I'm sorry about everything that happened a couple days ago."

"You really weren't to blame for that. That was all Morgan," I replied. "And poor information gathering on my part."

"Is what Morgan said really true? Is that why," she started to asked.

I had to cut her off. "I don't want to be rude, but we don't know each other. I don't like talking about what happened to me with people I know; I'm not about to talk about it with someone I don't even know."

"That's fair," she conceded. "Are you and my dad really together?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"A few years," I said, doing the mental math.

"Does he make you happy?" she asked.

"Yes. I wouldn't stick around if he didn't."

"Do you make him happy?"

"I hope so."

"You don't know?" she asked.

"It's complicated right now." I couldn't believe she came here just to interrogate me, and that I was actually letting it happen. "Look, I wasn't ready for you to know about all of this. I wasn't even ready to meet you. Personally, I was hoping to be in a better place mentally. I fully acknowledge that this is all very weird. We're just going to have to take this a day at a time, and see what happens. I'm not expecting you to like me, hell, I don't like me that much right now. We just need to be able to coexist."

"Agreed," Alex said. "I just wanted to find out if you really were good for my dad."

"That's between your father and I. Please show yourself out," I told her.

"Okay." She got up and walked out of the apartment.

Not long after the door closed, Tyler appeared in the hall. "How'd that go?" he asked, seeing the frustrated look on my face.

"Um, that wasn't my sister. That was John's daughter. She literally just came over here to interrogate me about my relationship with her dad," I explained. "We can't get the hell out of here fast enough!"

There was a second knock on the door before Tyler could respond. "I got it. You've done enough walking today," he said, crossing to the door.

"I think I have the wrong unit," I heard Ellie say.
