Chapter 15

For about half a minute I forgot where I was when I woke up in the morning. I suppressed a sigh and got up to shower to get ready for another day in solitude. I threw my hair up into a bun and put some makeup on so as not to look like complete and utter crap. I dried off and threw on some black jeans and a red top. I grabbed my keys and purse and headed for the door. "You don't want to ride together?" He called.

"I've got more errands to run after work, so it's easier this way." I replied, wondering if he noticed that I wasn't wearing the necklace today. I closed the door behind me and headed for the car. I drove to work and went back to our office. I was the first one there that morning and I didn't know how much time I had before someone else showed up. I bugged the computers so that we could see what everyone was up to. I just managed to get in my seat before the woman who sat next to me came in.

"Hi, I'm Emma. I'm sorry about yesterday. Please don't think we're horrible people. We're just a little bit too focused on our work." She seemed nice enough.

"I'm Kat." I replied, turning to face her.

"I thought it was Katherine?"

"It is. Evan is the only person who refuses to use the nickname." I explained. "But feel free. I always feel like I'm in trouble when someone uses my full name."

"Understandable." She nodded. We both turned to look when the door opened.

"I'm shocked. Usually Boss is here before me." The man said.

"I was shocked too." Emma replied. "Jack, this is Kat. Be nice." She turned to me, "This is Jack."

"Hi." We smiled and shook hands before he went back to his station. Emma proceeded to introduce me to the other two members of the team as they entered. Their names were Avi and Scott.

Evan entered moments later with a stack of files in his hands. He stopped in the center of the room, "We have a new mission straight from the top." He announced.

"And what would that be?" Jack asked. "We have to track down the right subjects to test the new Intersect on." He looked at me as if he was waiting for some kind of reaction. I gave none.

"Are we allowed to volunteer?" Avi asked.

"You have to pass the test just like everyone else." Evan was still waiting for a reaction.

"What are our assignments?" I asked, looking into his eyes.

"I want you giving the exams." He replied.

"Yes sir." I replied and accepted the file. It was going to get me out of this dark hole.

"You report after lunch." He said before handing out other files. I was the face of the op to the candidates who were applying. "You represent the Ring. We want to put our best foot forward."

"What exactly is the Ring?" I asked, wishing that I had a bug on me.

"We are an organization that operates within the CIA. We're working for a better government, and to do that, we have to bend a few rules." He replied. "We want you to join us because I know you want the same things that we do." Evan sat down and pulled his chair over to mine. "Will you join us?"

I paused for a long moment, looking at the others. I nodded my assent, "I'll join you, but you need to explain to me what an Intersect is." Playing dumb was the only real way out of this.

"It's a computer that is implanted into an agent's brain. Certain things will trigger the Intersect, giving the agent information on that person, or object." Evan explained.

"That sounds cool. I'm assuming that not every person can handle having one in their head? Why else would we be screening people for it?"

That afternoon I was in a classroom full of agents, watching them take the exam. Once they
were done, we processed the results and took the two who passed to the next level of the testing facility. The rest of the week went much better than it had started out. The only parts that I hated were the parts where I had to be intimate with Evan. I made it through though. I was lucky that he was busy, and couldn't accompany me back to Burbank over the weekend. I told him that I was staying with Ellie and Devon, but there was a different plan.
