I spent about a month and a half in seclusion before I got to go see Ellie again. I'd talked to Devon to give him updates on how I was doing. After that I moved into the spare room in Casey's apartment, even though we slept in the same bedroom.
One afternoon General Beckman called to give us an update on my brother. "He's not doing well. We're terminating the Intersect project for now. Agent Walker is returning to Burbank for another mission. She'll be in touch within the week. Mr. Bartowski will also be returning."
"I knew he was a lemon." Casey grunted. I punched him in the arm. "Admit it, you don't think he has what it takes."
"I plead the fifth." I replied.
Life returned to normal after Chuck returned, except for the fact that he wasn't joining us on missions. That didn't last long. I'd been planning a mission during my time in Castle, and here he was about to blow it all to hell.
I should back track just a bit. When Sarah and Chuck left, there was no doubt in my mind that they were together. Now that they were back, things were practically glacial. I didn't ask because it wasn't my place to get in between that. Casey was a tad more openly curious about it than I was.
While I was in seclusion, I'd been planning a new mission that entailed having Sarah pose as the mark's girlfriend. He was supposed to be buying a weapon from a high-powered arm's dealer. Everything was in place and perfect. And then there's Chuck. He's been moping for a solid month and now all of the sudden he wants to go after Sarah and put the team back together.
The night of the big op we had a club full of undercover agents ready to take down the dealer and in walks my brother to kill all of my perfectly laid plans. "Lemon, headed your way Walker." I spun in my seat at the bar to look for him.
"I'm going to kill him." I mumbled, turning around to face Casey, who was our bartender. "Let him have it Sarah." I sighed and took a sip of my water. She slapped him and he went down.
"Glass jaw." Casey chuckled and security took Chuck back to the kitchen. Casey and I met Sarah back there. "What the hell is wrong with you?" I yelled.
"Why am I being yelled at?" He asked.
"Because we've been working on this for months! This is also the first time I've gotten to wear normal clothes and not have to cover up!" I hit him with my clutch.
"And you look great!" He replied. "Just let me help!"
"No. You need to go." Casey replied. He called security and escorted him out of the building. Things were back on track until Chuck showed up on stage. "Oh son of a bitch." I groaned. "I don't think he understands that I could actually shoot him."
I turned in time to see him flash and start playing the guitar. He did well for a few minutes until he did a stage dive, tackling Sarah and the mark. "What are you doing?" Sarah yelled. She had to be the one to tell him that this was a set up. I didn't get to tell him because Casey had to restrain me from trying to maim my own brother. He took me back to the kitchen and made sure that I wasn't going anywhere.
Once it was determined that it was safe to leave we went back home to have some alone time. We went at it like we hadn't in months. In truth, we hadn't. He didn't want to hurt me by getting too rough. Not to mention, any pressure on those bruises hurt like hell.
We've had a rough couple of months. For a while my nightmares rotated between the shooting and not being able to get away from Evan. Nearly every night I was waking up in the middle of the night
screaming. Things got a little easier when I could go see Ellie during the days. The meds that Devon prescribed helped, and slowly I made it to where I could make it through the night without waking Casey. I might lie awake for a good portion of the night, but I wouldn't wake up screaming.
