Jacques Cousteau is famous for his love of the ocean. He served in France's navy, the Marine Nationale, and went on to build a legendary career in oceanic work of all kinds. In addition to inventing an underwater breathing apparatus, Cousteau worked in research, film-making, and writing, served as the director of a museum, and even appeared on a reality TV show — the common thread between all of these diverse roles being, of course, the ocean. Believe it or not, though, Cousteau didn't always want to make his living on and beneath the ocean waves.
