Uranus is named after Uranus, the Greek name of the Sumerian god Anu, who was a god of the sky. Uranus is the seventh planet from the Sun in the Solar System, and is the 3rd largest planet in our solar system. The planet is made up of ice, gases and liquid metals, making it an Ice giant, like Neptune. It has hydrogen (1H), helium (2He), and methane in its atmosphere. Near the top of its atmosphere, Uranus' temperature is 197 °C (322.6 °F; 76.1 K), but its small solid core (about 55 percent the mass of Earth) is likely around 4,730 °C (8,540 °F; 5,000 K).

The planet is tilted so much that it is considered sideways. It has five large moons, numerous smaller moons, and a minor ring system. Uranus is about 2.8 billion kilometers from the Sun, and it takes 84 Earth years to complete an orbit around the sun. It takes only 17 hours and 14 minutes to complete a full revolution. So a full year on Uranus takes approximately 43,000 days.

Uranus was discovered in 1781 and can be seen with the naked eye under the right conditions. Years before it was discovered, it was mistook for a star.
