"You've Got Mail" (1998) was Nora Ephron's modern update on the screwball comedy classic "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940) that replaces the good old postal system with email correspondence. The original 1940 movie stars Jimmy Stewart and Margaret Sullavan as retail coworkers who can't stand each other, but are unwittingly each other's anonymous romantic pen pal. In "You've Got Mail", Kathleen's (Meg Ryan) bookshop is named The Shop Around the Corner as a nod to the beloved rom-com.
