On the hit 1960s television series Gilligan's Island, the S. S. Minnow is a fictitious charter boat. The ship sank on the beach of "an undiscovered desert isle" (in the south Pacific Ocean), setting the scene for this classic situation comedy. The two-man crew consisted of millionaire Thurston Howell III, his wife Lovey Howell, movie star Ginger Grant, professor Roy Hinkley, and farm girl Mary Ann Summers, and the five passengers were millionaire Thurston Howell III, his wife Lovey Howell, movie star Ginger Grant, professor Roy Hinkley, and farm girl Mary Ann Summers.

Sherwood Schwartz originated and produced the American sitcom Gilligan's Island. Bob Denver, Alan Hale Jr., Jim Backus, Natalie Schafer, Tina Louise, Russell Johnson, and Dawn Wells are among the show's ensemble cast members. From September 26, 1964, to April 17, 1967, it broadcast on the CBS network for three seasons. The series follows seven castaways as they attempt to live on an island where they have been shipwrecked. Most episodes concentrate upon the various castaways' disagreements and their fruitless attempts to escape their fate, with Gilligan typically being responsible for the failures.

The two-man crew of the charter boat SS Minnow and five guests on a "three-hour tour" from Honolulu are stranded on an undiscovered island in the Pacific Ocean after running into a storm. Their attempts to be rescued are frequently foiled by the unfortunate first mate, Gilligan's, accidental behavior. Sherwood Schwartz, the show's creator, said in 1997 that the fundamental notion of individuals from various types and backgrounds being forced to learn how to get along and collaborate with one another in order to live is still "the most essential idea in the world today."
