Hello! I've just read you last request and I got an idea. Can you write something about Atsumu (I'm totally in love with him) discovering that some of his teammates had a crush on his bff, and he is like "why?" (Maybe he'll hurt her a little by doing this) but in reality he is the one with the biggest crush

featuring: atsumu (x fem!reader)

potentially alternate version to this request. i really liked playing around with this idea. remember, there's always an opportunity for more ;) enjoy!

you were on your way to school to meet atsumu after volleyball practice as you did most days. you didn't have much time to hang out at school and weekends were also hard because he usually had games so after his practices were really the only free time you had to spend with each other.

you would describe your relationship with atsumu as amicable and friendly. however, you were both aware of the rumors circulating about the two of you dating. you decided to make it into an inside joke between the two of you as you've remained friends despite both having been in separate relationships. unfortunately for one of you, feelings had grown past the friendship boundary.

he couldn't speak for you but he knew in his heart that it was going to hurt.

"hey, 'tsumu."

he turned around to see suna lightly calling his nickname in that ever mischievous tone.

"what is it?" he taunted. knowing suna, this would be good.

"your friend, y/n? is she single?"

"uhhh why?"

"just wondering," he answered with a smirk. "i mean, come on though. you know what she looks like right?"

"of course! what kind of question is that, dummy?"

"so you like her then?"

atsumu averted his eyes before speaking in a low voice. "i didn't say that."

"soooo you wouldn't mind if i asked her out then?"

"i..." he didn't want to pause but it was already too late. and being as observant as he was, suna didn't see through it one bit.

"i mean if you like her, i'm not trying to get in the way of that. just trying to be a bro, you know, since i know you guys are close," he explained.

"i mean we are," atsumu replied, trying and failing to bite back his next words. "but we're just friends."

something inside you hurt when you heard him say that as stood outside the door of the gym. you weren't trying to eavesdrop but as soon as you heard suna say your name, you couldn't help but listen in.

the thing was, it was the truth. you were friends. so why did it almost hurt to hear him say that?

"alright so is that a yes?"

"sure. do whatever you want, man," atsumu agreed in a half-hearted tone.

"yes!" suna cheered quietly before clapping a hand on atsumu's back. "thanks, dude."

you almost forgot why you were there as the team started rolling out of the gym, making their ways home.

"hey. you ready to go? earth to y/nnnn."

you broke out of your trance to see atsumu standing in front of you, his gym bag slung over his shoulder. you hesitated a bit before speaking, glancing over to suna, who was standing a ways behind atsumu for a split second. you swore that he smirked at you in that fraction of time.

"uh, yeah," you stuttered, focusing your attention before forcing a grin. "let's go. osamu coming with us?"

"uhh," atsumu mimicked your stutter, looking back at his twin, who was talking to none other than suna. "eh, he'll catch up."

you didn't talk much to him on the way home. there was some type of tension between you and he could only assume the worst.

the next school day came and went. he didn't see you that much during the day which was strange. even during lunch you didn't wander into his class and pretend like you didn't see him as you talked with your other friends, which always caught his attention. it's because he wasn't getting any of your attention.

sometimes he felt like you knew what you were doing to him.

today was one of those days... except he feels bad. it was like you were intentionally avoiding him. he didn't want to jump to conclusions, it's possible that you were just behind on some schoolwork and were trying to catch up. he smiled to himself, thinking about how bad of an influence he had become on you.

the rest of the day was pretty normal but practice was even better. he was nailing all his sets and serves, he even was able to pull off a floating jump serve. he was feeling a lot better than he was earlier that day. he hadn't talked to you about walking home together or hanging out after practice and he didn't want to assume anything. he just wanted to ride out this euphoric feeling.

that feeling was almost extended as he was surprised to see you outside the gym door. however, you didn't look pleased.

"y/n? hey," he greeted, a small grin on his face.

"hey," you replied bluntly, giving a half-hearted grin.

"i, uh, didn't expect you to be here. are you— do you wanna get going?" he asked, thinking that maybe everything that he felt earlier was all in his head.

"well, i—"

"hey, y/n!"

your attention was pulled to the voice that called your name which belonged to probably the last person he wanted to see.

"thanks for waiting," suna followed up. he was changed out of his practice uniform and into some more casual clothes but probably nicer than he usually wears. his hair looked damp as if he ran through the showers really quickly.

"you ready to go?"

atsumu looked at him incredulously before looking back at you with a confused look, silently waiting for an explanation.

"we're, um, gonna go eat somewhere," you said rather meekly.

suna clicked his tongue. "yep. we should go, the dumplings are calling."

you nodded, trying your best to smile and look happy to go out with someone who actually likes you. well, someone who likes you more than a friend.

suna smirked at his teammate. "see you, man."

"bye, atsumu," you parted, looking back at him shortly as you followed suna.

atsumu was left alone in the low lighting until the rest of the team came rolling out of the gym. he was in a fog as they teased him for not helping to take down the net, others letting him pass because he did well with his sets.

even though he was surrounded by people he cared about most, he had never felt so alone.
