Faye:

My parents are in the living room when I go to ask them.

"One of my friends from university is having a New Year's party. I was wondering if I could go?"

"A party?" Just by my mum's tone I can tell this is already going badly.

"Well, not really a party. Just a few friends. Less than 10." I clarify.

My mum narrows her eyes. "Who's going to be there?"

"They're from university."

"You expect us to let you go to somewhere where we don't even know anyone?" My dad asks.

"Gia will be there." I blurt out.

Their faces soften at her name, and they exchange looks.

"The house isn't that far away, either."

My mum waits a couple seconds before replying. "If we come and pick you up and you're drunk in any way at all, you will be grounded for the rest of this holiday. Do you understand? No alcohol. We don't want a repeat of what happened last time you went to someone's party."

My entire body tenses at this. "Okay."

My mum nods curtly, and I know that this is her way of telling me that I'm dismissed, so I head back up to my room, where I unlock my phone to text Marlo.

Just asked my parents and they said I can go to Jonah's party btw
Can't have any alcohol at all tho

Marlo's reply comes through as I'm texting Jonah a similar version.

Oh yayyy good I'm happy :))
No alcohol tho? Why's that

My thumbs hover over the keypad. Maybe I should tell him.

Now's not the best time, actually.

They're just a bit strict with this kind of thing

My phone buzzes a minute later. Even tho it's completely legal for u to drink?

Yeah lmao
Ik it sounds a bit strange
That's just how they are

Hmm okay
Well yeah I don't want u to be the only one who's not drinking
So dw I won't either

Noo it's okay
U can still drink I'll be fineee

Nah u need to have at least one person that can actually have a coherent conversation w u
U already know how everyone is like when they're drunk

I smile a little. Yeah they can be a bit much can't they

Wayy way too much
I'm surprised how u can still stand me
