You and Luke had been going on and off for two years now. His career the distance... They were the blame, or at least that's what you liked to blame it on.

Today was one of those nights, he showed up at your door before dinner. Unannounced, your mom adding a space for him in the table without an argument. Your father always put a face, your mother was always kind. You always counted down the minutes until he was gone again. Heart already aching.

Conversation was scarce, a few words exchanged. How is the tour? How is the band? And your parents?

His hand on your knee, squeezing... Your heart racing.

And then you were in the kitchen with your mother, doing the dishes while your father led him to the living room. The two of them sat across from each other. You could sense the tension in the air all the way from the kitchen.

The plate gripped tightly in your hand, you strained your ears to listen to the words as the conversation started between them. There was nothing different than any other time. Your father always tried his best to have a forced conversation, Luke was always polite enough to answer and keep it all going. Probably counting to the moment where the two of you would be left alone on the couch to watch movies until the sun came up.

But then your father said the words you never wished to hear him say: "Luke, I don't want you dating my daughter anymore." You held your breath, your heart pounding so hard you could hear it in your ears.

The silence dragged on... You could almost see Luke shifting in his seat. Your mother oblivious beside you.

"Really, sir? Cause we're kinda in love." Luke replied as if it were the most natural thing in the world but truth was you had never heard him say it before. Your hands shook as you set the plate down and walked to the entrance that connected the two rooms together. "I intend to marry her some day." He added, his eyes raising and meeting yours as soon as he felt your present in the room. You could feel that stupid grin taking over your entire face, brightening even the last speck inside of your eyes. And you knew it then, no matter what... This thing between you two would work.
