You'd been surprised to receive the invitation in the mail. It had been months since he had stormed from your house, not returning any of your calls or your messages.
"Are you sure he really wants me there?" You asked Michael as you finished fastening your shoes and stood up. Your hands shakily smoothed down your dress before your eyes met his. He knew you were nervous. You'd told him so many times that week how nervous you were about seeing him again at the baby shower.
"Why would he have sent you an invitation if he didn't? He sent those out personally." Michael assured you, his arm wrapping around you before he led you out to his car and the two of you were on your way.
The ride to Ashton's new house was short. You had found out that the "happy" couple had decided to move in together. A house and not an apartment, so the baby would have her own room. A wedding was in the plans, according to Calum. The piece of information had slipped out a few week's ago at a dinner you had with him and his girlfriend.
Since that day he'd left, you'd tried your best to keep him out of your mind. You got rid of everything that reminded you of him, changed your commute to work when he moved and even began going to a different supermarket in order to not bump into him or his budding girlfriend.
Now you were walking towards the backyard, a big pink box in your hands. That's when you heard it, his happy voice calling out your name before his arms wrapped around you in a tight hug. His familiar scent filled all of your senses, he always smelled like fresh laundry and spices. No other scent could ever replace the way this one made you feel and before your eyes filled out with tears, you were pulling away. A fake smile plastered on your lips.
"I'm so glad you came." He told you cheerfully before he took you by the waist and guided you through the party. You saw all of your old friends and his family. Everyone was so happy to see you.
It was too odd for you to be there. Seeing him with her... It hurt a lot more than you thought it would. He had promised you things while still with her and this happened. They hadn't meant anything. It had only been empty promises.
They were in the middle of opening presents when you told Michael you were walking home and simply stood up and began to make your way out. His heavy footsteps were closing in on you fast. His long slim fingers wrapped around your wrist to stop your movements.
"Why are you leaving?" He asked you, his eyes were hurt. He was still holding a golden brown teddy bear in his hands. He'd probably left everyone wondering where he'd gone.
"I'm going home. Go and enjoy your party. You two seem very happy." You whispered, your voice cracking at the end of the sentence.
"Please stay... I want you to stay, I've missed you." He pleaded softly. Tears stung your eyes as you looked away, trying to break free from his hold.
"All I want is for you to be happy, Ash... You'll always be m best friend but I can't do this... I can't watch you build your life with her, it hurts too much." You whispered before finally tearing away from him.
You heard him call after you but you were already running out of the house. Your heart felt heavy and the tears wouldn't stop coming. You had lost him...
