Ch. 23

Amanda wasn’t in school today, and to be honest, I didn’t blame her. We hadn’t talked since the whole episode at the party and I knew that I had to call her. The second I got into the door, I called her.
“Hello?” Amanda answered.
“How are you?” I asked, not knowing what else to say.
“I really don’t know. I don't know what got into him... He never got that drunk before. Are you sure you're ok?"
"Yeah, I’m fine... Do you want to come over?"
“Yeah that would be really nice. I need to get out of the house. My family keeps asking me if I’m ok, not even knowing what is wrong and I just—yeah, I need to get out of the house.”
“See you here,” I said, and hung up the phone.
Not more than ten minutes later, Amanda showed up at my front door. Her eyes were red and puffy, and she looked just plain horrible.
“Come here,” I said, and I hugged her. I felt so awful. “It’s Friday night. Do you want to go the mall?” I asked in attempt to cheer her up.
Amanda merely nodded her head, and we hit the mall. "So what are you going to do?" I asked as we walked into a store. I had avoided asking her for a while.
"Well now I have to break up with him. I don't want to be the girl who still dates the drunk, especially after what he did to me."
"I don't blame you,"
"The only problem is, is that I really like him. And unfortunately, I don't think that will change."
"Do you like this?" I asked. The shirt was a beautiful aqua off the shoulder shirt. She looked amazing when she came out and modeled it for me.
"Do you think I’m doing the right thing?" Amanda asked me as we stood at the register, paying for her shirt.
"Well, it's what I would have done. I know that it’s easier to say than to do, but honestly, I think that it is for the best.” I was never in a position like that. I never stayed in a relationship with a guy for very long. But then there was Mason. The way he made me feel was just so different; foreign to me.
"Ha, you're right. I don't need him!" she said, trying to convince herself.
About a minute after, Amanda’s text tone went off. I prayed that it wouldn’t be Lucas texting her, because she didn’t need the added stress right now, but it was. She pulled it out of her pocket and showed me the screen of her phone with a closed envelop jumping up and down and under it read: Lucas. Then it kept adding a number in front of it. He sent like five messages.
"Should I read it?" She asked me.
“I wouldn’t, but if want to know what it said I will read it first for you." Judging by the look on her face, she like my suggestion. To be honest, all of this drama seemed ridiculous. Guys are stupid. They get drunk, they cheat, the do a lot of stuff to screw up their lives. Once they mess with yours, you dump them.
"Yeah, that would be better," Amanda said, paying for the shirt as I walked over to the bench in the middle of the mall.
I nodded and clicked open. It read: hey, Amanda, I don’t expect you to read this, but I really am hoping that you do. I want you to know how sorry I am for everything that happened. I regret it and most of all I regret losing you. You are the best thing that ever happened to me. Amanda, I don’t expect you to talk to me face to face and I just hope that you get to read this message. I will always love you.
-Lucas
My jaw dropped in astonishment as I clicked through the messages.
"What?" Amanda asked, walking over to me.
"Read these messages." I said it. Her eyes moved back and forth from line to line as she read it over about three times.
"I still don’t care," she finally concluded, her face very indecisive as to what she wanted.
"Yes you do. You know you really like him," I said. I wasn’t overly thrilled at what he did, but the feelings were tangible between the two and it wasn’t something that she should watch them let go of.
"But these messages…they don’t mean anything." Amanda said, her voice shaky.
“You don’t know that,”
“Well what do I know, Alex? I know that he is a drunk! He always has been! When he drinks, it’s always me who gets the beating, verbally I mean. He has taken it too far and I am done.”
“So you want him to stop drinking.” I stated.
“Yes, more than anything.” Amanda admitted quietly.
“I have an idea.” I said, knowing exactly what I was to do.

A/N
I know that people probably don't read this, but I feel like I keep saying the chapters are getting longer and they aren't. I promise they will. I am writing them longer but I just wanted to experiment on the shorter side. And if you don't like it, no one is forcing you to read it!
Love you guys :)
