Ch. 27

Alex

I heard my phone go off, so I grabbed my stuff and ran out the door. Mason was here.

He smiled at me from the front seat. When I got in, he gave my hand a gentle squeeze and we drove to school.

We walked into the courtyard, getting separated almost instantly. My group of friends surrounded me, while Mason’s friends did the same.

The first person that I saw was Natalie, and boy did she look pissed. She stormed over to me, pushing past all of my friends.

“What do you want?” I asked with disgust.

“Did you know that karma is a bitch?” She said and slapped me.

To say that I wasn’t expecting that was an understatement. I just didn’t believe that she had the guts to do it.

I punched her right in the jaw, making her collapse to the ground.  I looked around quickly, seeing Mason trying to get through the newly formed crowd, but I just kept walking away.

Sitting in class, the phone rang. That wasn’t good. “Alex, office,” I got up, my heels clicking on the floor.

Walking into the principal’s office, I felt like such a delinquent. “Ms. Guviara, you may take a seat.” The principal called from his office.

I walked into his room to see Natalie with an ice pack to her face. It was clear for people in China to see that I bruised her face badly.

“Could you explain to me what happened?” Mr. Baxston inquired.

“I’m sorry, sir, I’m not fully aware as to what you are talking about.” I said, looking at him as innocently as I could.

“Now Alexandra, I know that you wouldn’t want things to take a turn for the worst. Please just cooperate and explain what happened.” His brows were furrowing. Did he just call me Alexandra? Wow. He was going to have a tough time dealing with me.

“I’m sorry, but I still don’t understand what I am to be explaining.”

“Could you explain what happened to Ms. Natalie over here?” He asked gesturing to Natalie.

“Well, to me, it looks like she either walked into a wall or had a locker hit her in the face.”

“So you do not know what really happened to her?” His voice sounded almost as if he was accusing me.

“No,” I said, shaking my head.

“The bitch is lying!” Natalie exclaimed. “She did this to me!” I just looked at her, putting on the best shocked face that I could.

“Now, now Natalie, I would calm down. If it was me that did that to you, I would have left you in worse condition.” I got up, walking out. Mr. Baxston called my name, but I just kept walking. I walked back to my locker, grabbed my books, and walked right out of school. I was only missing my study block.

….

Once school was over, I heard a car pull up in my drive way and shortly after, the doorbell rang. I really wasn’t in the mood to talk to anyone, especially Mason.

I opened the door, against my better judgment, to see none other than Mason standing in front of me.

“Alex,” he said, putting his hand on the door so that I wouldn’t slam it on him. “Can I come in?”

          “Yes,” I said quietly.

“What happened today?” He asked, his eyes looking deep into mine for an answer.

“I walked out of school.” I said, looking into his eyes. I was getting lost in them.

“Before that,” he said. “What did she say to you?”

“‘Did you know that karma is a bitch?’ And then she slapped me. You saw everything that happened next.”

“So avoiding me was what you wanted?” I was lost for words.

“Are you mad that I slapped her?”

“No,” he said, cracking a smile for the first time since he had been here. “I’m glad that you did that. I wouldn’t want to have had to do it.” I laughed. My boyfriend was willing to slap her for me.

“You know that I can hold my own!” I teased, pushing his chest.

“I guess so. Did you see her face?” Laughter took over and I collapsed onto Mason. We sat down on the couch together and I fell asleep there, in his arms.
