Ch. 29
Alex
Sighing, I hit my hands hard against the steering wheel. Why did everything have to be like this? Why? That was the only question that I had.
When I got to the stoplight, it was green, but I stopped anyways. I didn’t really care very much. It was late and I wasn’t on a busy road. If someone came up behind me they could go around or beep their horn.
The tears couldn’t stay in any longer. I let them slowly trickle down my face. Why? Why did this have to happen to me?
Sniffling, I composed myself, putting my hands back on the wheel and getting ready to drive. When I looked into my rearview mirror, I saw something that I didn’t want to see, a car, coming up behind me, going at least fifty miles per hour.
Getting scared, I smashed my foot down on the gas, but by then it was too late. The truck had smashed into the back of mine, causing me to jolt forward. I hit my head, hard against the steering wheel, making me see only black. I couldn’t have been sure if I was alive or not. It was too hard to tell. But at the moment, if I was alive, I wished I could have gotten out of the car.
“Alex? Alex? Are you alright?” Someone was asking me. I didn’t know where I was. I just wanted to sleep.
“Fine,” I said, opening my eyes to see Sean and Lucas looking at me.
“Mason will be right over,” Sean said to me.
“No, really, I’m fine. I don’t need him. I’m just going to walk home. My house is right over there.” When I started getting up, Sean put his hands on my shoulders and sat me down.
“You need to stay here. If Mason found out that we let you walk home we would never hear the end of it.” I sighed loudly, showing my frustration.
The squealing of tires caught me off guard. It was Mason’s car. He got out, slamming the door hard behind him. “Where is she?” He asked Sean, his eyes scanning everywhere to find me.
“Here,” I mumbled quietly and he ran over to me.
“Come here,” he said, taking off his jacket and putting it around my shoulders. I hadn’t even noticed that I had been shaking.
He ripped part of his shirt off and dabbed at the cuts on my face, causing me to flinch and back away from him. “I’m going home,” I muttered, trying to stand up, but I got too dizzy, causing me to fall into Mason’s lap.
“Alex,” he said, “stay here until the ambulance comes to take you. Go to the hospital and let them look at you. Make sure that everything is ok.” When I moved off of him, he started to get up and walk away.
“Where are you going?”
“To move my car,” he answered me.
“No,” I said quietly, putting on a pouty face. “Stay with me.” Tears started to form in my eyes but I refused to let them fall. They wouldn’t overcome me this time.
When he came back over, I snuggled right into his side. I was too out of it to be mad. My head was pounding and I hurt. “Can I sleep?”
“No Alex. You have to stay up until the ambulance comes.”
“I don’t want them to take me,” I said, my voice sounding like a whiny five year old girl.
