Decide

By: Samantha Bruno

Humans are such pathetic creatures. They struggle for what they believe is right when in reality, they are so wrong. They struggle for their own convictions. They only think about themselves. They don't care about their nation. They only care about their own merits, their own problems. This is the reason why there's no progress here in our country. Look at those people who sacrificed their lives for this country, for our freedom. They thought, if we have freedom, somehow, our country would prosper. But, look. Look at our generation. Look at this generation; all people only care about themselves. Then, they complain. They complain about everything. Complain about what's happening in this country. They all blame the government for the country's shortcomings. Look at yourself. Are you one of them? Are you one of those people who keep on blaming the government? Do you not blame yourself for not being a functional member of your society? Do you only see the negative side of your government, ignoring your own deficiency in your own society? What about you? What can you do? Yes, you voice out your opinions but is that enough? Is that enough to make the government change their way of administrating this country? As a youth, you are given education. You are given education to see the realities of life; to open your eyes to what's really happening in this country; to widen your knowledge about our current situation. Now that you knew, what will you do? When will you function in your society? As for me, I have too many idealistic thoughts about how I could help. But as I grew older, I saw there are so many boundaries... so many people who do not really care about their country. Is there still hope in this country? Can we, the youth, help our nation? What's with our talents and skills if we are only making our country proud? Can't we go beyond that? There are so many ignorant fools who keep on complaining about our country. But, what can they do? Can blabbering the flaws of our society change our perspective? Our society? Our community? Our nation? Family; it is the basic institution of an individual. Are they the only ones you should think of? How about your society? How about your nation? You want to be successful only for your own family? Are you going to stop there? Look at yourself. You keep on blaming those who have power to control this country. You keep on depending on what they will benefit you. Yes, I know. Even the government officials are at fault. They're just like you. It's for their family. They're not thinking about you, about us, about our nation. They're just thinking about themselves. Just like you.

Now, what can you do? As a youth, what will you do? What path must you pursue? Is it for your own selfish desires; for your own benefit; your own family? Or, will you think of this country as well? You keep on saying there's no hope for this country anymore. There's still is; it's us. Jose Rizal once said that we are the hope of our country. But, what can we do? What can you do?

Maybe, just maybe, if we start thinking about our nation as well, not only ourselves, not only our family, this country might develop. If we look around us and decide to make a change, maybe our country might progress to the better.

Now, where are those patriotic youth? Where are those nationalistic ideals? This country is waiting for us. It's waiting for you. This country is asking for our help. Asking for your help. It is your choice; to make a change or become stagnant once you've done your part as a member of your family.

Honestly, I'm one of those people who keep on blaming the government. But, I realized everything. Jose Rizal's novels inspired me to write such essay. Somehow, I feel guilty. What can I do? I'm just a student who aspire to become a doctor. Thanks to Sociology and History, my ideas are somehow connected to one another. :D

I hope I get to persuade you. But, if you don't agree, it's fine. This is my own opinion. :3
