The obnoxious horn pushes me ride out of bed. Boys start yell as I quickly get up and get ready. Surprisingly, I'm the first to be ready.
"Line up!" General Logan yells as we fall into line. We make it down to the mess hall and quickly eat.
After breakfast they push us into the training room to test our fitness. High first gets me to show off my leg strength. He pulls out my file to show me what he wants to see.
"Show me your skill of throwing knives." He pulls me into a separate room with targets and knives laid out on a table.
I hit every target right in the bullseye. General Hugh looks pleased at the work that I've done.
"Logan will be with you tomorrow checking out the rest of your file. He is going to tough on you but you have to push through it. He, along with the boys here, don't think your strong enough to be here."
"But I am. You see how well I've been doing today."
"You're the last girl we have had in the armed forces in centuries. They are going to be rough on you but you have to retaliate and show that you are tough." He says as I nod taking in what I have to do.
"Now go an get cleaned up and go on to the mess hall with the rest of them."
I scurry to put on uniform and go to the mess hall. Henry lets my cut in front of him so that I don't have to wait in the back of the line.
"Ladies first." He says quietly.
"Thank you, Henry."
We sit down at our table as he quietly talks to me about his day.
"Hey, Henry, are you finally going to talk." One boy named Jorge mocks him.
"Shut up, fat mouth. Maybe if you didn't talk so much you would be a better soldier." I fight back.
Everybody gets really quiet as I sit back down. General Hugh gives me a nod of approval as General Logan has cheeky grin at the comment.
"Thank you." Henry says quietly as Jorge leaves us alone.
"He deserved it." I say turning my attention to my food that I was dying to eat after my day of hard work. Nobody comes to mess with us for the rest of dinner.
"Nice job today." Oliver says while we get into our bunk. I get top bunk while he gets bottom bunk.
"Thanks." I smile climbing under the covers.
