Male voices were heard crossing a forest from side to side. Those men seemed to be lost, and sometimes someone was heard saying that they had lost the path, the path that a certain wizard had told them to follow to get to the other side. Undoubtedly, desperation gradually took over their minds and they began to see strange things among the trunks and treetops. Suddenly it began to rain, a rain that intensified the force of its fall as time passed; lightning flashed across the skies and threatening thunder ran through the nooks and crannies of the place.
The company kept going through the forest undeterred by the storm, until suddenly they came upon a metal fence and, on the other side, a small village with several humble houses.
Y/N was also wandering around with her umbrella in hand after taking a walk in the countryside nearby. The rain had caught her by surprise and she had to turn around to avoid getting covered in mud. However, hearing those male voices, unknown to her ears, she stopped behind a tree trunk, and with one hand she leaned out slightly to see who they were.
The company, meanwhile, was going through the fence, climbing it one by one. And when they reached the other side, they stood looking at the houses and the place that was before their eyes.
"I don't know this place," Thorin said, searching every corner with his eyes to see if it looked familiar.
"So what do we do now? Gandalf told us not to get out of the path," Bilbo said with annoyance in his voice.
"Do you think I didn't know what I was doing? Following that path would have gotten us nowhere," Thorin replied. "At least by following me we got out of that damned forest."
Thorin then saw out of the corner of his eye a dark shadow that seemed to be stalking them in the distance. At that very moment he turned his head to look at it better and saw that it was a woman, and a brave one, seeing that she, still posing his intimidating blue eyes, seemed unfazed, because she didn't move. Rather the woman seemed to show some curiosity, and Thorin was no less. The rest of the company immediately turned their attention to the woman who was watching them.
"Excuse me, but do you know where we are? Which way do we have to go to get to the Lonely Mountain?" Thorin finally asked as he approached her.
Y/N instead seemed to understand absolutely nothing he had said.
"Sorry, but I don't know that Lonely Mountain you mention..." she answered.
Thorin's eyes narrowed in confusion.
"We just crossed Mirkwood," he said, pointing at the forest just behind them. "We shouldn't be too far away. Where in Middle Earth are we?"
"Middle Earth? This is not Middle Earth..."
Without a doubt, that woman's words were incoherent, they didn't have a single meaning.
"What do you mean? Where else are we going to be?" Dwalin asked in a high-pitched voice, getting annoyed that he suspected she was kidding them.
"Lads, I think we're somewhere else... Don't you think so? If she doesn't know Middle Earth... Maybe this is... another world," Fili commented looking at the woman doubtfully.
Y/N was surprised to hear those words; or they were some guys who were crazy or they were really right and those words were true. They didn't look like strange beings, but rather ordinary little men in ancient clothes. However, they seemed certain of what they were saying by the expression on their faces, and perhaps there really were other worlds out there.
