Lagoona rested against the bleachers at school the next day. She was hours early to swimming practice, but she couldn't sit around and wait much longer. She heard that you would be at the swimming match later that afternoon, and she just couldn't wait until you saw her.
Lagoona already knew she'd make first place, that was no doubt, but hearing that you'd be there made the stakes even higher. She'd lose more if she didn't make first place, and she'd win more if she did. Lagoona didn't take coming in second place very well, and this was even more reason why.
But, contrary to her plans, Lagoona didn't go hours early to practice more. She actually went hours early to double check everything. She didn't want any chance of her coming in second, or in her mind, losing.
It was a win or lose situation to her. If she made first, she'd win. If she made anything else, she'd lose. Lagoona didn't want you to see her as a loser.
She decided that she had waited long enough, and walked through the field to the indoor pool. It was fairly warm in the pool building, meaning she'd have to wear extra deodorant. She didn't want to smell bad before she saw you. She dipped her hand in the pool and pulled it out. The water was cool, which meant she'd have to use extra hairspray to make sure her hair didn't frizz up.
She frowned and walked to the changing rooms. She definitely had to practice now.
She stripped immediately and slipped on her bathing suit. Lagoona poked at her hips and tummy. She hoped she didn't look too big. Or even too little. She wanted you to think she looked perfect.
Her appearance didn't play on her mind too much as soon as she got in the water. Almost immediately, she went under and opened her eyes. She breathed in and out deeply, trying to get her lungs used to the water once again.
She smiled and released any air from her lungs. The dim lights made it hard to see, but Lagoona didn't mind. She enjoyed the serenity it gave her.
You, however, stepped into the pool building by yourself. Jackson had asked you to grab his jacket from one of the lockers after being bullied again, and you agreed to help him. Even if you hated being in the pool building, you still wanted to help your friend.
You shivered. The building always gave you the creeps, but you pushed through the chills it gave you.
Lagoona's eyes landed on your form. Though it was distorted from the water, she knew exactly who you were.
She kicked off the ground and floated to the surface, her face breaking through before anything else. You screeched and flung yourself against the wall in surprise.
Lagoona held her hands up to show she wasn't going to harm you. You let out a deep breath.
"God, don't scare me like that!" You whined. "Ugh, I almost cried."
Lagoona giggled. "I-I'm so sorry!! I didn' mean to!"
You waved her off. "It's okay, I should've been paying better attention anyways."
Lagoona jumped from the water and pulled herself up onto the floor. You stepped back some, allowing her space to stand. She looked at you with wide eyes.
"Um...do you know where the lockers are?" You hummed.
Her eyes didn't leave you. "I can show ya..."
You followed her to the back, where she pushed open the changing room door and allowed you to walk in.
You shuffled in through the doorframe and looked around. Now where would that jacket be?
"What're ya lookin' for?" She asked, stepping closer to you.
"Jackson's jacket..." You replied shortly.
Lagoona inhaled deeply, taking your perfume into her lungs. She felt anxious from being so close to you. Her eyes roamed over your body, enjoying the sight of you in such a cute shirt.
Lagoona picked at the hem of her bathing suit. She hoped you were looking at her, too. She wanted to be pretty for you.
"I, ah...." She began. "Can we ..maybe...go to the diner after the competition?"
You furrowed your brows. Didn't she hate you? You could've sworn she gave you constant glares and scowls from passing by in the school halls. It didn't matter though, did it?
Lagoona continued to play with her bathing suit hem before picking at her nails. She seemed nervous and on edge. Her face held a light blush, though, so you figured it might have something to do with Jackson.
"Um, do you want Jackson to come?"
"O-Only if you want him to!! I won' say no, but if you don' want him to come then he don' have to!" She blurted.
You squinted your eyes at her. She seemed too on edge. You wondered if she had taken anything before the competition.
Her face got even more red, and it spread down to her neck.
"Are you okay?" You asked. "You look sick."
"I'm aight!" She chirped and cleared her throat. "So...diner? Milkshakes?"
"Sure."
You reached through a locker and grabbed what looked like the jacket and nodded at her. "Well, I should head out now."
"W-Wait!" She blocked you from leaving. "You're coming to the competition, right?"
"Yeah?"
You felt on edge. She had never tried to take up so much of your attention before, and her sudden mood shift worried you. Something else was happening, but what? You couldn't just assume, and so you waited for her to step aside before speed walking to the exit.
Whatever Lagoona was doing, you didn't want to be a part of it.
