[More Than A Feeling]
___
The inside of the shed had been gutted, every piece of equipment, tool, spare parts, and whatever else had been hidden away now piled high in the middle of the property. Everyone except for Abbacchio had helped, the oldest of the teenagers watching over Narancia to make sure that he hadn't woken up from his medically induced sleep from the drug they had to give him. They had been at it for at least half an hour, taking everything out as fast as they could and after it was emptied, using sheets of plastic and tarps to disguise it as somewhere else.
Standing beside the pile, (Y/n) tossed a shovel into the disarray of items as Mela explained what happened before they went to the hospital.
"He drew a map, of Hawkins, and he found the chief in a tunnel that those things made." She told him while leaning an old bicycle tire against everything, heaving a sigh when she thought of how she'd have to haul it all back inside when they were done. "He's been drawing the same weird monster and I only thought that it was a villain for his little story. I didn't think it'd be using my son as a spy."
(Y/n) shook his head and dropped whatever it was that he was holding to rush over to the older woman, his face twisted in anger but not for the concerned mother.
"Hey," He began while gently holding her bicep, pulling her attention away from an old swing that used to be attached to a swing set. "Don't blame yourself for something like that. I told you last year that we'd find Narancia and we did, this year won't be any different."
Mela looked up at the determined male and smiled gratefully at him, she was glad that someone other than her son's friends and the chief cared about him. Him and his friends were able to keep the Demogorgon away long enough for them to get Narancia out of the Upside Down which was enough time to get her son back into her arms, safe and sound.
(Y/n) let his hand slip off her arm and gave her a pursed smile, his eyes connecting with her softened gaze. "It's as good as dead, okay? No matter what happens, Narancia will always come back to you. I promise." He insisted making Mela speechless at how much trust he had in the people helping her. He used to be selfish, a pest is what she heard Pannacotta call him one time, but he's changed so much even in the year that she's seen him more.
He cares about the people around him, he has empathy that he hadn't had before, and he wants to help the ones close to him. She knows that he was only really helping last year because of Catherine's friend, she seen his guilt and self-pity that he had last year, but this time he was here to get her son back from the creature using her son as it's eyes into their world. She could tell that his promise was genuine and something that he planned to go through with, everyone here would be doing the same if it came to it.
"(Y/n), thank you." Mela uttered as she blinked back the tears that threatened to fall down her cheeks. Using her finger, she wiped at her eyes and sniffed when her nose burned, "I know I didn't thank you last year but thank you so much. You and your friends risked your lives for my son, thank you."
The teenager was stunned, his body tensing as the woman carefully hugged him with enough warmth to unfreeze even Abbacchio's blackened heart. He wrapped an arm around her back and struggled not to break down himself from hearing her trying not to cry, no one had thanked him with as much sincerity and genuineness as she had. He felt like he finally had something that he accomplished that wasn't a number of things that he's done, he was able to bring a woman's son back to her and keep doing it until he couldn't.
He moved his stare away from her to the house a few meters away and it landed on a head of white hair through the window. He was sitting in a chair next to the sleeping boy's body and reading a comic book that had been placed on his bedside table, X-Men or something from what he could see. The frown that was on his face in the dining room had disappeared and was replaced with a neutral face as he read the words in the speech bubbles, his brows pulling together occasionally when something happened.
