When the visiting hours were over, the nurses basically had to force Tyler out of the hospital. He was adamant about staying the night. I assured him I’d be alright, and that I needed to rest, anyway. After he left, I kind of felt sad but relieved at the same time. I laid in bed waiting for sleep to take over, but my mind was overthinking everything that had happened and what would happen next.
It was nearly 3 am when finally I fell asleep.
Next morning I was woken up at 8 am by a nurse that came to check on me and gave me my medicine, took my temperature. Then I ate breakfast that tasted better than I hoped.
Soon after, Travis came inside.
“Good morning Amy. How are you feeling?” He smiled at me.
“I’m feeling alright, just a little tired.” I yawned.
“Your organism is still recovering, and sleeping in bed all day is not helping. You’ll feel much better the moment you’ll be able to move around more.” He smiled brightly at me.
“Sure hope so. Too much rest is not for me. I need my lazy days, but this is too much. On that note, can I go home today?” I asked.
“You are one impatient patient, Miss Amabel. But to answer to your question, I don’t know yet. We’ll run blood work, check your injuries and I’ll have a gynecologist come to check on your baby. If all is good, then yes, you’ll be able to ho home.” He explained.
“I hope that’s the case. When can we do all of this?” I was impatient indeed.
“The nurse should be here any moment. She’ll help me with your check up. She’ll take your blood as well. The gynecologist will come soon as well.” He came to my side and helped me to sit on the edge of the bed with my legs dangling over the side.
At that moment, a nurse came inside and both of them started my check up. Even with all the soreness, I was getting better. Before I had an opportunity to talk to Travis some more, he was suddenly called down to ER.
That left me alone with the nurse, who took some blood from my arm. She was in her late 30s and really nice.
“That should do. I’ll take this to the lab and tell them to get to work, so you can have results as soon as possible,” she smiled my way.
“Thank you,” I answered politely.
“Is there anything you need before I leave? You can call me anytime, but just in case, while I am still here,” she asked.
“No, everything is fine. Again thank you,” I assured.
“Well then, have some more rest. If anything, just call the nurses’ station.” She pointed at the small button on my left.
I nodded.
After about half an hour, another doctor came in with a portable ultrasound machine or whatever it was called.
“Are you Amabel?” She asked me politely?
“That’s me.” I answered.
“I am Dr. Schwarz. A gynecologist. Ready to check on your baby?” She smiled, and I nodded, excited and a little nervous.
“Before we start, tell me how are you feeling? Is there any nausea, cramps, pain in lower abdominal area?” She pushed some buttons on the machine.
“No, nothing. Just my breasts are getting more tender than usual,” I answered honestly.
“That is normal. When was your last menstruation?” She asked.
“I... I don’t remember.” I said quietly, feeling stupid that I couldn’t even tell when was my period.
“It’s ok, don’t worry about it. Alright, take off your underwear. Then move a little lower on the bed, lay back and bend your knees. I will do vaginal ultrasound. It won’t be the most pleasant experience, but we have to work with what we have.” She instructed, and I did as I was told.
“Just relax.” She took the ultrasound wand and slid it inside of me.
It indeed was really uncomfortable feeling. I stared at the screen, not understanding anything that was shown.
“Alright. You see this black part?” She asked, pointing at a small circle. I nodded my head, not taking my eyes off of the screen.
“That is the gestational sack. You can’t see the embryo just yet, as it is too small. Right now, it is attached to the yolk sac that provides the embryo with nourishment. In a few weeks placenta will be fully formed and will take over passing oxygen and nutrients to your baby. I’d say you are just about 4 weeks pregnant. The baby is almost the size of a grain of sugar.” She was telling. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I might’ve not been able to see my baby yet, but even the small black circle made my heart swell with happiness.
The doctor continued. “I would like to see you in about 8 weeks, when you should be 12 weeks along. I don’t see anything that we should worry about. Everything seems normal. What I would like is for you to avoid stressful situations. You’ve been through a lot and stress is not good for you or your baby. In about a week or two you could start to feel symptoms such as morning sickness, fatigue, more frequent urination. It’s normal. But if you feel scared about something or seems like something is wrong, you can call me anytime. If you want, you can get another doctor. There are two more great gynecologists in this town that I could recommend. But do talk to someone, even if it is just to calm your mind.” She kept talking. I liked her, so I wouldn’t need another doctor, besides Travis called her and I trusted his judgment about my health.
“I don’t want to change doctors.” I told her.
“Alright. Here is the first picture of your baby, even if you can’t see it yet. Next time we meet, you’ll see his head, arms, legs and hear his heart beat for the first time.” She smiled at me while handing the ultrasound picture.
“Thank you so much.” I felt relieved and happy.
“Here, you can clean yourself up. I’ll be leaving now. My contacts will be written in your discharge papers as well as the date and time for the next check up. It was nice to meet you Amabel and I hope you get better soon.” She said her goodbyes and left while I just kept staring at the small black circle where my baby was growing.
