Destiny didn't know what she expected the minute they stepped inside of Aubrey's hotel room. Maybe she expected a hot makeout session. Touching, groping, kissing, maybe. She could say that she definitely hadn't expected for him to flip the light switch on and make a beeline for a briefcase that was propped up against the suite's living room couch. Does he want me to help him with the education program? she wondered as she followed him to the couch.
"I want to talk about the contract with you," he said, sitting on the couch. He lifted the briefcase and set it on top of the coffee table in front of the couch. He didn't hesitate in popping the case open.
She clasped her hands together in front of her. She'd thought that with the intelligence and support she'd shown at the award ceremony, maybe he had a new respect for her. Maybe he was willing to throw the contract idea out the window. She was silly to think that he'd forget about the damned contract and allow a real relationship to progress.
"Getting to know you has been one of the most thrilling experiences I've had for a long time," he said, licking his fingertips and flipping through the paperwork in his briefcase.
"The feeling is mutual," she echoed, trying to keep the disappointment out of her voice.
He removed several pieces of paper, bound together with a mini binder clip. "Our interaction hasn't been...normal for me. This contract usually comes before the dates, and the...intimacy. I just don't want there to be any misunderstandings regarding where we stand. I think it's best for us to get this out of the way now." He looked up at her.
She took a deep breath and smoothed down the skirt of her shimmering golden dress as she sat on the couch beside him.
He held the papers in his hands while looking at her. "I'm going to leave the room while you read the contract."
She frowned. "Why?"
He hesitated.
"You're afraid of me judging you?" she asked him.
"The content is...quite sensitive."
"I can't believe you've done this numerous times and you're still shy about it," she said, holding out her hand for the paperwork.
"I'm not, usually," he said, handing the papers over to her. "I will be in the bedroom. Call for me when you're done." He stood and kissed the top of her head before leaving the living room.
What could possibly be in this contract that would make him fear my reaction? she wondered, flipping through the papers. She sighed and sat back on the couch.

How did he know my middle name is Renee? I never told him that, Destiny thought to herself. She took another deep breath and sat back farther on the couch. She removed her shoes from her feet and drew her knees up beneath her chin as she read.
