"Can you believe we're already graduating?" Jasmine screamed. She adjusted her cap so the tassel wasn't hanging in her face.
"No, I can't," Destiny said, shaking her head. Where had the time gone?
Chad stood at her side with his arm casually around her waist. Looking over his shoulder. Dapping his friends and bumping knuckles with them whenever they walked by. "I have to go find my seat," he said, and pressed a kiss to her temple.
She nodded. "All right."
"You two are so adorable," Jasmine said and hooked an arm around Destiny's shoulders.
"Have you seen Candace?" Destiny asked, turning her head and surveying the crowd of students gathered on the field of Greene Stadium.
Jasmine shook her head. "Nope."
"She's moving out today," Destiny said. "I can't believe college is actually over."
"Do you have anything lined up?" Jasmine asked her.
"I have offers lined up but haven't decided," Destiny muttered, turning her cap over and over in her hands.
Jasmine's mouth slanted. "What are you waiting on? Did you get an offer from The Post?"
Destiny nodded.
Jasmine's eyes widened. "You got an offer from The Post and you're not jumping on it? What is wrong with you?"
"I don't know if I want to stick around D.C.," Destiny said.
Jasmine frowned at her.
"I know."
"What about Chad? Where is he going?"
"He has an internship with ESPN," Destiny said.
"Oh, right," Jasmine said, snapping her fingers. "Does he know where he'll be working?"
"New York."
"Hmm."
"Yeah."
A voice over the loudspeaker came on. "We need all graduates to find their seats. The ceremony is about to begin."
Jasmine and Destiny looked at each other. Jasmine squealed. They embraced each other.
Destiny placed her cap on her head and checked her hair to make sure that her curls weren't disturbed. She found her seat and sat down, smoothing the folds of her graduation gown. She couldn't calm her nerves. This was it. College was done and after today, she would officially be a Howard University graduate. She surveyed the other students. If they were nervous, they had an amazing way of hiding it. Everyone else was all smiles and energy. She looked toward where the parents and families were seated, checking to see if she could spot her parents. She took a deep breath and faced forward.
"I would like to welcome the Class of 2017!" the dean greeted. The dean had words of inspiration but kept her speech short. "There has been talk about who would give the commencement address for this year's graduation ceremony. Several candidates were considered, but there was one that stood above the rest. Known in the entertainment industry as a triple threat, and currently making major headway as the frontman for a program saving music programs across the country. I would like to welcome none other than Aubrey Drake Graham, who we have always had a good relationship with, here at Howard University. Please put your hands together and welcome him."
Destiny's brows drew together and she sat up straighter in her seat. This isn't happening, she thought to herself.
The applause was deafening. Aubrey stepped onto the stage and walked across the wide stage in long strides. Dressed in a black suit with a black dress shirt, top button undone. No tie. He grinned and greeted the dean warmly, first shaking her hand and then embracing her. He spoke into her ear and laughed before moving to stand before the podium.
