chapter thirty six: you're no good alone

When Number Five had dropped in that alleyway alone only yesterday, he immediately felt a sense of dread in his chest as his feet fell into the cold and wet puddle on the ground. He knew immediately that he was alone, but he still up and looked towards the closing portal, yelling first for his husband and then for two of his brothers. His first thought was of course of Anthony, who he really didn't trust enough to be on his own for too long. He worried for Vanya too, because she would be so confused whenever she woke up, and Allison who couldn't even speak.

The sound of gunshots is what forced him out of his thoughts, so he walked out into the street and was met with a full blown war happening in the middle of the Dallas street. 'SOVIETS ATTACK U.S' is what the newspaper he had found in the rubble headlined. He was no history buff, but he was sure that there was no way in hell that there was ever a war like this in Texas. Five didn't even have time to fully comprehend his thoughts or what was even happening before a missile shot out from
behind him, throwing him to the ground.

Once he had stood up again and regained his composure, he had immediately tried to go over and help his family, but before he could Hazel showed up behind him "Come with me if you want to live" not the most welcoming statement to hear.

"What about my family?" Five realized at that moment that he says that line far too often.

"Can't save them if you're dead" Hazel had told him, and he knew that the man was right. Taking one last glance at his family, he took his hand and they both teleported away with the use of a briefcase, landing in the same street just ten days earlier.

Hazel only briefly explained what was going on, before three assassins from the Commission, the Swedes, arrived on the same street and shot Hazel dead almost immediately.

Number Five had gone to Elliott's place, asking the man countless questions. Thankfully, the man was able to give him some sort of lead and gave him the location of his Diego. Five also somehow found Luther along the way, and it wasn't until Diego had told him that he actually did know where Anthony was that Five was able to find him.

Watching his entire family die for the second time was already fucking with his head, but this time he had the added part of seeing Anthony die right alongside them, which was just fucking with him even more.

The apocalypse was now only a mere eight days away, and it was the first time in his life since the first apocalypse that Number Five felt truly helpless. He had absolutely no idea how to stop it. At least last time he had the lead of the prosthetic eyeball, but this time he really did have absolutely nothing. Sure he had the footage of his father on the grassy knoll, but he was almost sure that was going to be a dead end.

Number Five had learned a long time ago that he really did need his family's help, despite how long he tried to push them away before. He always thought that he worked best on his own, but even at the Commission he would've never been able to handle it if it wasn't for Anthony being with him the entire time. He was no good alone when it came to this sort of thing, and this time it was more evident.

Sitting in the backseat of the car, he leaned his head against his husband's shoulder, all of their arms tangled together as they just touched each other wherever he could. One of his hands mindlessly fidgeted with one of the buttons on Anthony's shirt, as he struggled to keep his eyes open.
