chapter fifty one: the sparrows

Anthony wasn't exactly sure how they had ended up in such a situation like this one. Truly, the last thing he had expected to see on their return to 2019 was not only the very much alive Reginald and Ben Hargreeves, but also a completely different family standing on the balcony ahead of them. Sure, he probably should have expected something to go wrong in this situation, nothing ever went right for the family, but this was possibly the last thing he could have possibly anticipated.

"Dad who the hell are these assholes?"

He had never actually met Ben Hargreeves during his short time in the family, because of course the sixth umbrella had died long before Anthony was even a thought in any of their minds, but from what he had heard through conversations with Five and what he had read in Vanya's autobiography, this was nothing like the brother the family once knew.

"Ben" Klaus stated with a smile.

Luther walked forward "Is that really you?" he asked in disbelief, unable to actually believe that his brother that had been dead for seventeen years was now somehow standing in front of him again.

"And who-" Diego started, raising his voice so much that Anthony couldn't help but flinch. "-are the weirdos on the balcony?"

The group looked down at them with complete and utter confusion. "They are the Sparrows," Reginald revealed before pausing. "My children."

There was a slight rumbling noise throughout the room, the ground and furniture trembling, but everyone decided to ignore it. Anthony looked at the group, just mentally groaning at the entire situation. Seriously, all he wanted to do was come back to this timeline and take a nap with his husband, who was actually also still concussed from the fight they had just gotten out of only a few mere hours ago, and now he was dealing with whatever this was.

"I'm sorry, what do you mean your children?" Five asked as he turned to look at his father. "That's not possible, old man."

"Of course it is!" Reginald defended. "I think I'd know, wouldn't I?" he asked as the Sparrows made their way down from the balcony to stand across the way from the siblings.

Klaus looked at them "Everybody else can see Ben, right?" he asked, pointing at him.

"Cute hat Sundance" Ben insulted him, but the man saw it as a compliment and tipped his hat.

"They call themselves the Umbrella Academy" Reginald spoke up once again. "A group of scheming, perfidious malcontents who accosted me in the fall of 1963 when I was away on business in Dallas. Be warned, they claim to be my spawn."

Five looked out to the foyer, eyes focused on the briefcase that still sat on the table.

"Claim?" Allison repeated as she walked slightly closer to him. "Look, Five, what the hell is going on?"

"I don't know yet but it's concerning" he replied, his hand naturally dropping from Anthony's.

The man at the front of the Sparrows, who was just assumed to be the leader of the group, pointed towards his father. "Is he telling the truth?"

"Not the part about us being perfidious" Vanya replied, speaking for the first time since their arrival.

"No, we're amateur-fidious at best" Klaus agreed.

"But we are his children and this is our house" Vanya finished what she had been saying before being interrupted by the other man.

Anthony had finally come to the conclusion that the siblings he had become close to and grown attached to were actually more stupid than he had originally thought they had been. Seriously, did no one in this family understand how a timeline works?
