"Are you sorry we drifted apart?

Does your memory stray

To a brighter summer day

When I kissed you and called you sweetheart?"

-Are You Lonesome Tonight?, Elvis Presley, 1960.

Despite being tired, today was already going so well. Jared had planned a surprise picnic for us, getting my favorite sandwiches, taking me to our favorite hiking spot, and just being with me. He truly knew how to make my days brighter.

We finally made it to the top of the hill, overseeing the entire island. I laid our blanket down and Jared quickly unpacked our lunch. We took our seats next to each other and began to dig into our food. The sound of water crashing onto the shore, the strong smell of our salt and vinegar chips, the cloudy skies above us, it was all so good. It reminded me of simpler days. I wish I could go back to that but I'm loving the new days I'm creating. Especially with him.

"Oh, white bread wasn't available?"

"Not today. Ricky hadn't gotten his shipment yet," Jared said while focusing on opening his sandwich.

"What kind of bread did you get?"

"Italian," Jared said while he then took a bite of the sandwich. I smiled at his already messy face while wiping off some lettuce hanging out of his mouth.

"Good guess," I smiled while then taking a bite of my own.

"Wasn't really a guess, if I'm being honest," Jared shrugged with a small smirk on his face.

"What do you mean?"

"Well, um," he began to shift a bit uncomfortably. "Harry was there," he admitted. I was taken back a bit by his answer. I didn't expect that at all.

"Oh.. I see," I answered quietly.

"Yeah.." he answered. I continued to eat my sandwich while he did the same and nothing but the ocean was speaking. Finally, Jared broke the silence.

"Hey, can I ask you something?" He asked while turning towards me. I quickly chewed my food up and answered.

"Of course."

"Why did you guys break up?"

I take back my words from earlier. I didn't expect that. It was straight forward and honestly, the last question I expected him to ask.

"What?"

"Well, you told me you guys were arguing. Arguing morning and night. Constant tension. And you said it was a bad breakup, which yeah. Seems like it, since neither of you really talk to each other anymore even when the opportunity presents itself and it's kind of difficult not to talk to each other in your position, and I'm sure there was more I can't remember at the top of my head, but is that was caused the break up? The arguing? Or was there more to it?" he said while laying back onto his elbows and looking out to the ocean.

"Oh.. um.. that's-"

"A long story?" He interrupted. I looked up at him to see him squinting his eyes from the sun while looking at me. The wind blew through my hair, covering a lot of my face, thankfully, so he couldn't see my emotions. If I even had any.
