I kept my head down trying to keep my breathing regular. I was panicking, Nana was going to leave me. Her threats are actually beginning to take place. The man had noticed my panic.

“Ma'am, I actually would like to get to know him first before taking him in. I would love to have him, but I have boys that might not be able to get along with him. I just want to make sure. I'll visit for a week then if I think it's okay, I'll take him. I'll see you tomorrow.” He told her.

Nana nodded with a fake smile. After driving home, she screamed at me. I was trembling as she punched and kicked at me. It was summer so I couldn't escape her during the day. Luckily the man came at 8:29 am. I stood with my head down. He led me to his car.

I was confused when he had me sit up front. I folded my hands in my lap, not wanting to dirty his car with my filthy hands. “Good morning, Harrison. My name is Ambrose.” He said. I gave a soft hum of acknowledgement.

We stopped at a drive-thru. He ordered some food then took us to a park. We sat at a picnic table under some trees. I continued to keep my head down. Ambrose slid a wrapped sausage biscuit to me. I didn't touch it in fear I would get yelled at.

“Harrison, you have to eat. I know you haven't eaten yet. Are you afraid that I'm going to hurt you? I simply want to get to know you. If you want to, we can go somewhere you want next.” He said softly. I bit my lower lip, hesitantly looking up to him.

Ambrose smiled at me and I nodded. “Okay then. How old are you?” He asked. I slowly touched the wrapped biscuit. He didn't tell or touch me. “16 years old.” I whispered. He nodded, encouraging me to eat.

I slowly nibbled on it. “Thank you. How are you in school?” He said. I could see the hologram flickering dimly. I swallowed the small bite in my mouth. “I'm okay.” I whispered.
