We have started walking.
We had run a long time before we slowed to a walking pace. Although, I had to stretch my strides to keep up with Lamar.
He looks back over his shoulder at me, sees me struggling and stops. When I am next to him, he loops an arm around my waist and apologizes.
"It's okay," I say. "I get it, tall people issues."
He smirks. "So you have short people issues?"
"You have no idea," I say.
"Well, then, short people issues," he says.
"Don't call me that," I say.
"Fine," he sighs. "Stella. I'll just have to carry you to help you get over your 'short people issues'."
"It wont help, but, alright," I sigh.
He smiles and I smile back as he takes me in his arms, bringing me off the ground. I throw my arms around his neck and bury my face in the crook.
As he walks, I inhale his scent. He smells the same. Like metal, soap, and him. But he also has a slight scent of mint. Possibly from the salve for his wound.
He carries me for a long time. I think I dose off for I little while, but, either way, I am awake when he speaks.
"Stella," he says, his voice slightly strained. "We have to start running again."
I open my eyes and lift my face from his neck, he sets me down and I only have a few moments before I hear gunshots. We start running.
We run and run and run until I can't feel my legs anymore. Until I don't hear our shoes smacking the concrete with each step. Until I don't care that my lungs are calling out for air. And all I hear is the gunshots until I fall.
A pained sound escapes me when I hit the ground. I don't see any blood. I don't feel any pain. I don't think I was shot. But I realize we are only a few dozen yards from Erudite head quarters. That's because the school is just a few dozen yards from Erudite head quarters. I can't believe I forgot about that.
"Stella," Lamar says, he's crouched over me. "Stella, are you hit?"
I shake my head. "No, I'm fine," I say. "Go!"
"No," he says. He wraps an arm around me and helps me to my feet.
Another gun goes off.
He cries out and falls. I scream.
He is bleeding.
He coughs.
"Lamar," I say, sobbing. "Lamar, no."
"Stella," he says, wincing. "I'm fine, just - ahhh- go."
"I'm not leaving without you," I say. "I don't care what happens, I'm not leaving."
"Stella, you have to go."
"No!"
The Dauntless traitors crowd around us, the grab my arms and hold them behind me. They force Lamar to his feet, he clutches his already wounded shoulder.
He's okay.
They yell orders at each other that I don't hear. We start walking towards Erudite.
But then he starts thrashing.
He kicks them, throws his good arm around, trying to get the Dauntless away from him. He starts towards me and throws guards away from me.
I shove off the last guard, throwing my elbow at his face, he cries out in pain and falls.
