My eyes are open. I am gasping. Lamar has a hand on my arm, I know he is talking but I can't hear him. Until-
"Stella," he says. "Stella, do you have any idea what happened?"
I shake my head.
"Are you okay?" He asks. I nod. "Do you want to go home." I nod again. He takes me into his arms, pressing my head against his chest.
I am exhausted for some reason, I can barely keep my eyes open as he carries me home.
But then, there is a message being broadcasted across the city.
"Attention faction members!" The voice announces. "There is information on part of the regions outside the fence being safe, anyone who wants to go, may go. Repeat. There is information of the regions outside the fence being safe, anyone who wants to go, may go."
And then, we are home. And there are a few dozen people rushing towards Amity. Anthony is back, discussing things with Alice. Faith greets us when we walk in the door.
"Hello!" She says. "Nice to know nothing happened to either of you on your trip. Where did you guys go?"
"Dauntless," Lamar says.
"And you didn't think to bring back any cake?" She sounds like we had just killed her mother. "What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Calm down," he says. "Maybe there will be cake outside the fence."
"Wait," she says. "You guys are going? I thought you would just stay here!"
"Erudite is searching all over for us and you think it's a good idea to stay?"
"I never said it was a good idea," she says.
He sighs. "We'll be upstairs until she wakes up."
"I'm not asleep," I say.
"Really?" Lamar asks. "Thought you would be, you looked exhausted."
"I am," I say. "I wish I could fall asleep, but since we're going outside the fence-"
"We can stay here and you can rest until your ready to go."
"Yeah, you guys can take that upstairs," Faith says. "You two and the other two just can't give me a break!" She walks away, likely to the kitchen.
"We can," Lamar says. "Just rest-"
"No," I say. "I can rest when we get there. Plus, I can make you carry me again."
He sighs. "Fine, when do you want to leave?"
"Well," I say, jumping down from his arms. "We should gather food first. Find Adrian and Grace, get water too. Then, we can leave."
"We already found Adrian," Anthony says, him and Alice walk down the hallway to us. "But there was no sign of Grace or Jaden or his group of friends."
"They must've already left," I say.
"See, Anthony?" Alice says, punching him on the arm playfully. "I told you!"
"Well, stock up on food and water, get guns and knives too," Lamar says. "And go get Adrian."
They nod and I hear the refrigerator open.
Lamar turns me to look at him. "You over rid the system. The fear-landscape, Stella."
"Yeah, so?" I say, jokingly.
He smiles. "You know," he says. "You could avoid death serum, or even memory serum."
"I'd prefer to, you know, not find out," I say.
He smirks. "Yeah."
* * *
We are all gathered by the front door, all of our food, water, and clothes gathered into bags.
"Everybody ready?" Adrian asks.
We all nod and say, "yeah!"
"Let's go!" He yells. Everybody bursts through the front door except me and Lamar. I lock the door behind us, and we follow them, running, soon moving to the front of the crowd.
"That's where you two belong!" Faith calls out. "Born leaders, right up front!"
This is where we belong.
I look over my shoulder to see the factionless behind us. They are all screaming while we are quiet. When they used to be all in order. They are a riot, rioting for freedom, equality.
We were excluded from our factions during the war, but we are above them.
This is where we belong.
