The pen moved swiftly, making all the right lines and curves Penelope commanded of it. She wrote carefully, putting her thoughts of the previous night onto paper. She'd had fun despite not knowing anyone at the fair. It had been a really good night, probably one of the better days she'd had in a long time, and she had a lot to say about it. She couldn't remember how long she had been sitting there with her journal, but she could feel her legs getting stiff from not moving in a while.
The morning sun shone into the living room perfectly through the front window, which made for great writing light. It was also pretty warm, which Penelope liked. She had walked down there some time ago to sit and write instead of staying in her room, which was what she had been doing since they moved in.
The karate demonstration was really cool, she wrote, pausing to think about what exactly she wanted to say about it. She wrote with careful consideration, using a soft tipped pen despite already having a light hand, and chose her words attentively. Everything about the process was very important to her. It was a spectacle, very loud, bright, and intriguing. I think my favorite part was when Hawk took Demetri onto the stage to hold the board he ended up breaking. It was pretty funny, but also equally amazing.
Now that I think about it, I should properly thank Hawk. He went through the trouble of getting me the raccoon plushie even though I didn't need it. It wasn't anything special, but he still did it. And he doesn't even know me! So, I'm very grateful and once again amazed. Not to mention, he only had to play the game once to win it! I don't know how he did it, but it was pretty cool.
For a moment, I thought he was going to fight the carny. I know Frankie wanted to. That guy was really mean and for no reason. We should have at least gotten a small prize for the games Frankie and I did play, but he didn't even mention it. All he did was tell us to get better and come back again if we thought we could "actually win something." That was so rude.
Pausing for a moment, Penelope looked up as she heard footsteps overhead. She could tell it was Frankie, because Uncle Donnie's footfalls were heavier due to his tall stature and large build. She doubted he would be getting up anytime soon, though, since he'd made himself sick at the fair. He'd said something about trying all the best foods they had there, and in true Donnie fashion, he'd gone through with it. When she and Frankie had met up with him at the car, she could only sigh at the appearance of his green tinted face and the way he'd told them he'd actually enjoyed himself.
After a moment, she turned back to her journal and continued: I think Demetri's friends are all really nice, especially Moon and Hawk, so I'm glad he invited us to hangout with them. Aisha and Miguel are really cool, too. I think they made last night all the more fun. I hope we can hangout with them again sometime soon.
As soon as she dotted the period, she heard Frankie jump from the second step of the stairs to the floor, much like she would do at their old house. Penelope blew on the ink to help it dry faster before closing her journal and grabbing the TV remote. She crawled off of the floor and onto the couch, settling into it comfortably. When Frankie walked in, she sat on the opposite side of the couch and leaned against the armrest.
She yawned before she could say anything. "Did you sleep good?"
Penelope nodded as she started scrolling through Netflix to find something to put on. They sat quietly and watched the options go by, nothing immediately jumping out to them.
Frankie groaned after five minutes of staring at the screen, pushing her palms into her eyes. "Wanna make breakfast and watch Gilmore Girls?"
Shrugging, Penelope got up and started walking to the kitchen. Frankie followed her, grabbing the aprons off the wall when they passed by.
