Hawk couldn't believe his ears. They were burning hot, the same heat crawling up his neck as his hands tightened on the steering wheel as the disbelief and stress took over his body as he mentally repeated the words he's just heard to himself. Then he looked to the passenger seat to make sure he wasn't imagining the whole situation, that moment being just enough for him to accidentally swerve the car.
He heard a shout of his name and it was all enough to jolt him back into reality, so he turned his attention back onto the road. Luckily he didn't hit anything and he steadied his vehicle back into the lane he needed to be in, but he felt like he had been struck by a semi truck.
"What?" he finally got out, his brain resuming normal function and making him realize he had to say something. If he didn't, it'd look bad. If he said the wrong thing, which he was sure he had, it would also look bad. However, he continued and said the only thing that came to mind. "What?"
"I think I'm pregnant."
There was another long pause from him, but this time he didn't send them across two lanes of light traffic. He was more prepared for the statement, but that didn't mean he was any more ready for those specific words. It was the last thing he expected to hear on a normal weekend afternoon. In fact, he wasn't expecting to hear those words for at least a few years unless it was coming from an adult or someone he wasn't so close to.
A million and one questions began to pop up in his mind, never mind the fact that he still had to pay attention to the street laid out before him. It was with that startling thought that he finally said, "I need to pull over."
So, he found a sparsely populated lot and parked his Sentra as far from the store front as possible. Once the car had stopped moving, he turned the radio off so that there was no extra noise filtering through his ears and he unbuckled his seat belt, getting ready for a long conversation.
He turned, eyes as big as saucers, and took a deep breath. "Frankie, that's serious."
"I know," she groaned, hiding her face in her hands. Her seat belt soon became too uncomfortable, too, and she pressed the release, throwing it off of her body as if it had attacked her. After it was no longer restricting her, she sunk into the seat and crossed her arms over her chest. "I'm kind of freaking out."
"Kind of?" he asked, already exasperated. "How are you not full on freaking out?"
"I'm really trying not to," she said and huffed. "I just need you to take me to the store so I can get a test."
"How do you know?" he asked.
She sighed, tilting her head back and starting at the top of the car. "I didn't think much of it, but at the party, I got sick from smoking. I thought it was a bad strain, but I never get sick smoking weed. Never. Then yesterday I got sick before school and I've been having these weird cramps-" she groaned and sank lower in the seat. "So, yeah, I think I'm pregnant."
Hawk stared at her, then leaned back against his seat and nodded slowly. He'd do it, there was no reason for him not to, but he still needed a moment to process everything that was happening. He rubbed his hand over his face and groaned. "Jesus Christ."
As if he wasn't stressed out enough. First Penelope, now this...
After destroying the project, Hawk knew a conversation was coming after seeing Penelope's reaction. He knew he'd upset her, but she looked further upset after her friends engaged the Cobras. It sucked knowing he upset her, but he had no idea how deep that ran until he met her after school that Monday...
~
"Why did you do that?" was her first questions. She wasn't welcoming when he turned the corner, finding her in their spot - a little hideaway under a stairwell at the back of the school. Her arms were crossed and he saw the distress in her eyes. It was the question she had been asking herself all day and he knew it had stressed her out.
