Frankie traced Demetri's face gently, her finger dragging along his jawline when he opened his eyes to look deeply into hers. Part of her couldn't believe how lost she could get in his hazel irises, the other part of her was ignoring that disbelief in favor of allowing herself to float.
For as long as she'd called it "fucking," she never thought she'd call it "making love." She supposed life was strange like that. Or maybe she was finally learning what it meant to feel and be loved by someone who didn't want her for the tricks she knew; someone who didn't want her just for her body or the drugs she used to get. Maybe she'd finally found someone who loved her.
In any case, her and Demetri had gone way beyond the limits of what his desk chair was made for. They had slow, passionate, amazing sex all over his room, ending up in his bed at some point. She still thought she was undeserving of the way he held her, kissed her, told her he loved her, but could ignore that little voice in her head when he looked at her like they were the last two people on earth. Laying in his arms, staring into his eyes, tracing his handsome features with the tips of her fingers, was the only thing she wanted to think about.
With him there, he didn't just numb the pain, he made it go away entirely. It was as if all the bad things in the world didn't exist when she was with him, when they made love, when they kissed. The rest of the world melted away and she didn't know how to tell him how appreciative she was for that.
She didn't know how to tell him a lot of things, but she knew that at some point she would have to tell him.
She'd have to spill all her secrets, but she wasn't ready to do so just yet. Though she wouldn't admit it, the thought of doing that scared her. So, she buried it with her past and let it rest.
Her thoughts were broken through by his voice.
"While I don't mind the spontaneous sex, we should really get back to work."
He made no move to get up or pull away from her despite his words.
"I hate doing school work," she told him softly. She drew her gaze down to his lips as her finger came to them. She dragged her touch along the gentle flesh. "I hate school."
"I would have thought with your teacher of a father, you might not," he teased lightly.
"School is just easier with Penelope."
"How so?"
Frankie didn't respond, one of those secrets bubbling up in the back of her throat as if it knew she couldn't keep quiet about it. She tried to force it back down, to bury it again, but it fought her. It won.
"Because I'm stupid."
"Whoa, hold on a second," Demetri said, eyebrows knitting up as he looked at her crucially. She didn't look up into his warm, well meaning eyes. "You're not stupid, Frankie."
"Yes, I am."
"I don't believe that."
"I can't read."
He was quiet for a moment, confused.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm a stupidly bad reader..." Frankie felt her face grow hot. Her lip pouted and her eyebrows scrunched up angrily. She cast her gaze down further, staring at his chest instead of his face. Her chest felt tight, as it had been a long time since she'd had to explain it to anyone. "I'm dyslexic. Penelope used to help me, like, all of the time. It used to be easier, but after Aunt Egan and Uncle Ed... it all fell apart. She couldn't help me as much anymore, Dad couldn't do much because he was busy, my grandmother tried... but she wasn't as good as Pen was. It just got worse after that and I gave up, not that I was in school much after that anyway..."
