The other girls keep asking if she's afraid.

Though they should know by now that being afraid is considered having emotions. The Red Room destroys emotions. She doesn't understand them. She doesn't trust them. Emotions can change based on reasoning and the knowledge surrounding them. People are more easily controlled when they are emotional.

Natalia is Dreykov's best girl.

She can't afford emotions. Not after Rose.

Natalia watches as Madame B lines all the girls up in her generation. Dimitri and Madame B each have two girls lining up. Upon a girl's first year in the Red Room, it doesn't matter their age, a decision will be made on which trainer would take over that child.

Natalia is one of Madame B's.

There are only four girls left in her generation.

Two from each trainer.

She can feel the air shift the moment the Soldier steps into the room. All the girls start to tense beside her, and she tries to hold back the curiosity that is threatening to emerge. The other girls hold their breath, watching him follow behind Dreykov and Karpov.

Natalia doesn't look at him, not yet.

She stares at Madame B and Dimitri, watching them for clues. The Soldier is a ghost. Dreykov brought him here for a reason. To pick a girl and train her. They all have heard the stories of what happens to the assets he chooses to train.

Most of them don't survive.

Natalia notices the way Dimitri shifts on his hills, ready to pounce on his target and the way Madame B's hand drifts lower, even with the dagger she covers through her clothes. They are wary. Not scared because they don't get scared. Wary.
