I have never been to court. I tried my best... but most of this is from TV or what I have read. Sorry... I don't really know how to feel about this chapter. Thank you to all who left helpful comments - your feedback was greatly appreciated!

IMPORTANT: What would Yelena, Sam, and Bucky say in a maid of honor/best man speech? I need it to be funny, amusing, and emotional. And I'm stuck...

WARNINGS: Secretary Ross. General Dreykov.

"Could we push the death penalty?"

Matt shifts in his seat, struggling to contain the smile threatening to slip past his lips. "I believe a lifetime in jail is a more pressing concern of the former Secretary of State than death. Prison is a nasty place for a man like him. Based on the rumors floating, there are many looking forward to a chance at their own retribution."

"They need to get in line." Tony shakes his head, digging his fingers into his palm, "We are right back to where we started. They are not accepting any plea deals."

"It doesn't matter if they do," Matt comments tiredly, suddenly very aware of the sleepless hours they have spent researching for evidence — something or anything — that's strong enough to not be held into question. "The only reason they are still attempting to fight us at every turn, though the evidence is stacked against them, is simple. Ross will not survive in prison. Even if we push for solitary confinement — people will still find a way to get to him. So they are fighting for even a slim chance of winning."

"Right," Tony growls, barely resisting the urge to pounce up on the balls of his feet and pace the room from corner to corner. "They are going to use every ounce of sympathy they can grovel. It will be a dirty fight. But luckily for us, we have an ace up our sleeve."

Matt smirks, "We'll see them in court."

Scott drums his fingers along the edge of the couch, stubbornly trying — and failing — to hide the nerves flowing through his veins. But he's not the only one.

The rogue Avengers are all sitting in the large common room — plus King T'Challa and his guard Okoye - waiting for the video footage of the courtroom to appear. Some are better at hiding their emotions than others — Scott doesn't glance at the spy or Wakandian duo as the thought crosses his mind, though the urge is so very tempting. Too tempting.
